No one ever says "happy Halloween" anyway. So the question is moot.

As a Brit the Happy holidays thing always baffles me. Most people are irreligious or Atheists yet still wish others a merry Christmas. Saying happy holidays is equivalent of saying happy vacation over here though, I have seen a few cards with seasons greetings on.

In the US, a British/European/rest of the world "holiday" is a "vacation." We go "on vacation," not "on holiday."

In the US, a holidays is merely a day or days celebrated for a specific purpose.

"Happy Holidays," in the US, encompasses all holidays people potentially celebrate from Thanksgiving to New Years Day. That period of time is known as "the holidays." I don't believe the time from Halloween to Thanksgiving is considered "holiday season" by most people, though I've heard it referred to as such.

I can see why the phrase would be confusing to a British person.

I'd rather "happy yuletide" or "happy solstice", thanks.

Thanks.

Maybe we should just have "Happy Whatever Day".
Seems like the way things are heading.

This new fangled expression "Happy holidays" is just SO offensive.

I mean no one EVER used that expression until Obama took office, and all of the SJWs took over a couple of years ago!

In fact they now even have this outrageous hit rap song using the expression!

The artist is MC Bing, or sumpin like that!

Will this new fangled war on Christmas EVER end?

As far as I'm concerned, it was big business, which tends to be politically and socially conservative, that made their employees say, "Happy Holidays." Contrary to what the right and Trump may say, it was the right that started this crap.

I don't think so.

28,500,000 google results for "happy Halloween!". It's commonly said around the time of Halloween. Apparently though "happy Halloween" is not considered as offensive to people who don't celebrate Halloween as "merry Christmas" is to people who don't celebrate Christmas. You don't hear of stores encouraging their employees not to say "happy Halloween" to people because it might offend someone who doesn't celebrate Halloween.

Politically conservative, but also 'politically correct' or at least 'considerate', unlike much of the US right (which is more reactionary than conservative anyways...) they go out of their way to not intentionally offend, which of course was met by reactionaries looking for an excuse to be offended (a trait they love to point out in their revolutionary opponents but fail to notice within themselves).

Back when I was a theistic satanist I was very biased about Christmas. Now it doesn't matter anymore or offend me.

I do and I've known wiccans/pagans who do as well. Although for many, Holloween is called Samhain and it's celebrated differently than the Holloween most non-pagans are familiar with.

I think the 'Happy Holidays' issue might be a regional thing as well. If you live in a predominantly Christian area, 'Merry Christmas' probably makes more sense. I live in a culturally diverse area, and 'Happy Holidays' seems to be the more appropriate greeting around here.

In Dutch we say something similar like happy holidays because we include newyearseve in the holidays. The closest translation of our saying (prettige feestdagen) means something like happy festive days, I think that's an efficient way to wish everybody fun around their days off to celebrate whatever they want with family and food.

That's kinda my point. The only folks who ever say "happy Halloween" are Wiccans, or folks who go to cosplay conventions, or members of George Romero fan clubs, or others who have a special interest in Halloween. And even they only ever say to members of the same in-group. Its not a common greeting among the general public.

Does Holy Day apply to Judeo religions only though? It seems Pagans and Idolaters identify their seasons as Holy as well. It's like the Holistic health trend.

I say Happy Holidays because Christians get on my nerves in general. I am a Christian but the spirit of Evangelicalism and certain Judaic "cults" are as much an abomination as anything in modern America.

I thought they called it Samhain.
