It's really simple. After 8 years of democrats running the economy into the ground and claiming that it would have to be the new norm and that it was impossible to recover from, Trump promised otherwise. It all comes down to the economy.

THE ECONOMY HAS BEEN SLOWLY RUNNING INTO THE GROUND SINCE THE 1980s!! !! !! !! !! !! !! When all the wealth is constantly funneled to a small minority, the majority lose the ability to purchase anything without going into debt! The ONLY reason the economy hasn't crashed is the constant expansion of debt.

Well, what can I say?

America is going through some very traumatic changes. And people left and right feel that their freedoms and identities are threatened. Then along came someone who offered law and order and a return to American "greatness."

Also the beginning of 2010, the GOP did adopt a sinister more Orwellian approach to politics. And the lies they created such as claiming Obamacare created death panels were some of the most widely believed by both Republicans and the wider public. As a result, the framework was set for the Republican party to want to burn Washington to the ground.

Trump's rise surprised us all. It shouldn't have.

It’s pathetic. They blamed Obama for the massive recession that was already in the making around late 2006.

If the number of racists in the U.S. is responsible for putting Trump in office, how do you explain Obama getting elected?

I guess the racists stayed home.

That doesn't seem likely. You would think they'd be highly motivated to go to the polls to keep the black man from winning the presidency. Racism is certainly still a major issue in this country, and Trump has certainly empowered the white nationalists and white supremists. But I don't believe their numbers are large enough to have as much influence on Trump's election as your suggesting.

I'm not talking about them. I'm talking about everyday average people who never join an organization or even think of themselves as racists.

There were several reasons why Trump was elected. Among them:

He presented himself as a non-establishment candidate at a time when Americans on both sides were sick of the Washington establishment. Trump simply had to point out what was obviously broken that no one else was talking about to start gaining support.

The media in their unending idiocy kept attacking him, thus keeping him in the spotlight as far as Republican candidates went and ultimately allowed him to turn the tables on them by pointing out the obvious bias. To quote the Penguin, he "played them like a harp from Hell".

The Democrats' golden girl got exposed as an incompetent who thought herself above the rules and common sense. It didn't help that she wasn't half the orator that Obama was and that many in the rust belt didn't see her as good for the economy.

Sanders proved surprisingly good at getting a hard core support which in turn led to a split base as many of his supporters thought he got screwed.

I met a crazy who said something like Obama upon leaving the presidency ascended to the role of eternal god emperor or something and is currently passing crazy laws that Trump cannot veto. Conspiracy nuts.

Actually, I think a lot of people wanted an “outsider”, a non-establishment person.

My response isn't really directed at you, but just to play off your points...

I don't think it's purely dislike of a female president. Part of Trump's strength is he has no real opinions. He will hate any group if that hate gets him attention. Women feel he won because he hates women. Other groups feel he won because he hates them, etc., etc. He wants attention and realizes he can attract that through appealing to people's anger and resentment.

I also think the number of people who find Trump surprising are a factor in his success. If you grew up with someone like that, there's nothing surprising about his behavior and popularity. A lot of his detractors seem genuinely surprised at his "opinions" and erratic behavior, as if a person can't be that non-sensical or ridiculous, which just gives him space to get away with more. Politics was made for people like Trump. The fact that people continue to think he is some new personality in the political world says nothing bad about him and only shows their own laziness. England had a king who beheaded a whole series of his wives. Are American unfamiliar with this?

I also never got--and still don't understand--the idea that Trump is an outsider. He's very wealthy. Politicians are the business people of the political world. He may not be part of Washington, but business has such an influence over politics in the US. How is he an outsider? A janitor being president would be an outsider, and that's why that will never happen. If Trump were so different and such a wild card in the political world he wouldn't be president.

I absolutely concur.
That was Henry VIII who decapitated his wives.

And that the former KGB did their opposition research.
