I believe Death could be our comforter and counselor after life. He is the one thing that makes us all equal no matter who or what we are. We are all united in the promise of death. :skull:

I sent my Soul through the Invisible,
Some letter of that After-life to spell:
And by and by my Soul return'd to me,
And answer'd: 'I Myself am Heav'n and Hell.
Omar Khayyam

Perhaps heaven and hell is what you make it? Or what people make you? "Hell is other people" indeed.

“The mind is its own place, and in itself
Can make a Heaven of Hell, A Hell of Heaven.”

So sayeth Satan ( ) in Paradise Lost

Perhaps Hell is an internal state. I’ve been there!

Maybe. Satan ( ) says:

“Better to reign in Hell, then serve in Heaven.”

I was never a big fan of American Horror Story, but I remember one episode in the season about voodoo and witchcraft the loa Baron Samedi showed a girl a vision of her own personal hell which was an eternity working in a fast food restaurant she hated serving hot greasy fried food to rude customers all day.

So maybe hell isn't all fire and brimstone? :chin:

I would bet that "hell" has some connection to Norse mythology.

You mean the palaces Valhalla and Fólkvangr? Where the warriors who die in battle go to enjoy a grand feast before killing each other all over again?

Who knows?

"Hell" seems like a northern Germanic word...

Well the Romans did combine the old pagan beliefs with the newer Christian religion when they brought Catholicism to Europe through the Roman Empire with syncretism. So it wouldn't surprise me.

Quote:
Old English hel, hell, of Germanic origin; related to Dutch hel and German Hölle, from an Indo-European root meaning ‘to cover or hide’.

You were right. :)

It's a Germanic term. It's found in all the Germanic languages in some form. It has a pre-Christian origin.

Christianity just adopted it from the pagan.

Many say that the origins of Hell as well as other tenets of Judaism and Christianity come from Zoroastrianism.
