It's a literally factual statement about actual shepherds (although the "f*****g" part was probably added more for shock value) which works well as a cautionary analogy to consider before one sets out to follow metaphorical shepherds.

As for critical thinking, you have that entirely backwards.

IOW always be cautious of the leaders of our world.

For one thing they are the ones who often milk us of every hard earned cent we have and then force us to slaughter each other during times of war.

I don’t follow any shepherds.

As a microcosmic vision of how the world is, it’s wrong, based on a narrow personal view.

If people follow that line of thinking, they won’t have any fun.

We all pay taxes....

I have trouble following rules laid down by shepherds unless I agree with them.

It’s probably a good thing that I live in a reasonable country...

Having to follow dumb religious rules laid down by shepherds (and the Bible) was lousy and not something I could’ve kept up forever. Whenever I heard a stupid rule, I wanted to break it.

We are all looked after by shepherds. There is no escaping that, unless you're a criminal or a true rebel who lives by his/her own rules.

Most of the time, people have elected the leaders and have played some sort of role in establishing the rules in the first place.

We are also free to disagree with the rules, although not necessarily break them, and work towards change (gay rights/marriage, abortion, giving women the right to vote, etc.).

In the context of Christianity, I always hated being called a sheep. Sheep are particularly stupid animals, and it made it sound as though we should mindlessly and passively do whatever a shepherd says.

“Shepherd” might be somewhat of a triggering word for me, though.

Agreed. Hence why I don't like Christianity. :)

I don't like being under the aegis of anybody whose sole purpose is to "look after me," without allowing me to look after myself.

I've never "followed" any one person in my life. I follow ideas more. I have an intrinsic mistrust for "charismatic"-type people.
