36 is above drafting age

Autism, depression, anxiety disqualified

Meps

United States

But if I got drafted, other incompetent recruits also got drafted

So whatever

Not all military jobs are combat

See if I can pick MOS and be officer or e4

Who was this "They" you refer to? If Nazi Germany, then it was toward the end of the war, when their best soldiers were already fighting, crippled, or dead. If it was Imperialist Japan, then during that time, many children were taught to fire weapons and throw grenades, if only to defend their homeland from Allied ground troops.

But you could also be talking about Abu Sayaf, Boko Haram, Al Quaida, and a host of other radical Muslim splinter groups.

I'm pretty positive our country did this too during the American Civil War and other wars we fought during the 1700's and 1800's. Not that I'm judging here. I mean hell, in those days you were pretty much considered an adult at 14 because your average person wasn't expected to live past the age of 40.

The Enrollment Act, 12 Stat. 731, enacted March 3, 1863, also known as the Civil War Military Draft Act, was legislation passed by the United States Congress during the American Civil War to provide fresh manpower for the Union Army, thus producing the first wartime draft of U.S. citizens in American history. The act called for registration of all males between the ages of 20 and 45, including aliens with the intention of becoming citizens, by April 1. Exemptions from the draft could be bought for $300 or by finding a substitute draftee. This clause led to bloody draft riots in New York City, where protesters were outraged that exemptions were effectively granted only to the wealthiest U.S. citizens.

And yet they executed boys as young as 17 for desertion.

Old enough to enlist, old enough to die. Deserters deserve to be shot, anyway, regardless of whether they enlist, get drafted, or receive a commission or warrant.

I shall happily join them if I'm ever drafted. You can oversee my execution Fnord. :salut:

Don't worry. No one would dare shoot my personal chauffeur and valet!

In reality, most people who go AWOL get OTH discharges (Other than Honorable). It's not good to have that on your record---but it's not as bad as having a Dishonorable Discharge.

In reality, too, one has to really screw up in the Armed Forces not to get an Honorable Discharge.

The point of hanging is to instantly break your neck. Not to strangle you.

But stuff goes wrong in executions. And often the victim does end up slowly strangling instead.

That's so sad. :(

My first thought would be we are in big trouble if they are drafting a 61 year old with a slight limp who does not speak clearly.

The draft had ended by the time I was 18 but the draft and resistance to the draft was very much a real thing throughout much of the time I was growing up, so it was something I had to give a lot of thought to. I have not given the question much thought since. My thoughts did not revolve around the morality of the Vietnam war at the time. The first thoughts were I was scared s**tless of being crippled or dying but also dealing with the physical and teamwork demands required. My conclusion at the time was I could not live with the guilt of knowing somebody else might have died or be seriously wounded because I did not fulfill my obligations so I would go. Of course thoughts and what I would have actually done had my draft lottery number come up might have been two different things. And now I am more cynical/selfish/smart so if the situation becomes a real possibility I might come to a different conclusion. All hypothetical.

If I was drafted to go to war, I'd do my duty and fight for my country.

And what if your country was doing something evil like commiting mass genocide? Would you still fight for your country?

I refuse to fight for an evil empire.
