Why do   liberals   a lot of people think   some    all Trump supporters are stupid?
Well, it's likely because:

• In January, the Trump administration assassinated a top Iranian commander and almost started World War Three.

• In February, Trump was acquitted of impeachment charges by a corrupt Republican majority despite clear evidence of guilt.

• In March, the coronavirus began to spread like wildfire thanks to Trump's criminally negligent failure to take early action.

• We spent the next two and half months in lockdown as the death toll in this country rose to over 100,000 and millions lost their jobs.

• In June, Trump used tear gas to clear the streets of homeless people around a church he never attends to provide a photo-opportunity for himself holding up a Bible he never reads.

• Meanwhile, American cities are burning as arsonists and looters demonstrating against the death of one man are met with rubber bullets, truncheons, and more tear gas.

... and those are just this year's highlights ... so far ...

I lived and worked in a small rural town (population approx $3,000) over ten years ago. It was a farming community. I talked with a retired farmer sometimes who at that time was in his nineties. I'm guessing he's dead now. At that time he said FDR was one of the worst presidents the U.S. had ever had.

Of course there are bright ppl who voted for Trump. People can be very smart in some ways and appalling stupid in others. But then there are only so many stupid things one can do or say before people start to reach certain conclusions...

This is not helped by the fact that the Republican party has morphed into the anti-science party. Capitalist Republicans might dislike scientists bc they advocate policies that would hurt their profits (climate change denial, formerly tobacco health risk denial). Evangelical Republicans dislike scientists bc they contradict a literal interpretation in English of the Bible (whatever translation they like best I guess). And conspiracy theory Republicans dislike scientists bc they distrust academia in general (anti-vaxxers, ppl who think academia is controlled by Marxists, ppl who think academia is controlled by Freemasons, ppl who think fluoride in the water is poisoning us). There's obviously a lot of overlap. And a lot of Republicans who are as appalled by this anti-science culture in their party.
This sowing of distrust for science has had the tragic consequence of leading at-risk Republicans to disregard social distancing measures as a bunch of liberal sciency mumbo-jumbo. How many elderly Republicans have died bc they listened to Trump that covid was just being blown out of proportion?

Right FDR created the enormous FICA tax.

They’ll be arguments, certainly, if that thread you mentioned would be started. But it wouldn’t be locked, unless the personal insults started flowing.

How would you feel, Sly, if Trump decided to make himself “President for Life”?

And don’t call me a Democrat. I’m an independent. I think Biden leaves lots to be desired.

I don't think Trump is a good President.
I don't think Biden would be either.

And yes, I see you as being pretty even-handed in the political debate. 8)

The only way to find if that's true about Biden or not is to let him have four years at the wheel.

I just don't get how people want to willingly elect a guy who is openly screwing them over. With the coronavirus is concern is not the safety of americans.....its just 'well how fast can we get back to business as usual' granted does not seem like that is going to happen anytime soon now. All he cares about is weath and buisness, he doesn't care about democracy, he doesn't care about human rights...he only cares about profits.

He doesn't even care about his supporters...he just likes they support him, but its not like he plans to give them all special status when he attempts to become dictator. LIke do you supporters really think he will just opress all the other americans but not his supporters? I realize you want to be on the right side of history...the oppressors rather than the oppressed...but trump does not plan to keep you as the oppressors he means to oppress all you guys too.

I think a lot of Trump supporters have just been brainwashed, some of them are even good people but now they think antifa is after them at all times and that the democrats are all evil and waiting to attack and so their only chance is to support borderline facist Trump to stay safe...from the ebil liberals who will burn their house down and murder them on the streets and in their sleep. I mean I don't know what all this is about as a liberal I mostly want to stay home and enjoy my things here...not go trying to commit vigalante justice against anyone perceived as right wing. But I mean I am a real life liberal...we tend not to be as exciting as the internet idea of us all being crazy justice 'warriors' or whatever in fact we can be quite boring.

Yes I heard another poster make this point about the similarities between Trump supporters bleating like sheep similar to north korean supporters of dictator Kim. I think Orwell addressed this in his book Animal Farm.

Only thing is the American public has been brainwashed since the 1770s which is a long time.

How serious is the 'non compos mentis' issue re Biden ?

For me personally?
Big.
Because I want a strong America to counter china.
But I am not an American. <shrug>

While Reagan did well overall, I thought his performance was a worry, at the time.

From my POV, I don't really care which party wins.
I am just hoping America keeps pressure on china.

Not *my* problem.

I have heard it said that Biden, if the Democrats win, will step aside.
Some reason will be created. <shrug>
Time will tell, if he gets in. 8)

Honestly? I just think Trump is stupid.
And it's not about him being Republican, it's about him personally, there are intelligent Republicans but he's not one.

Trump supporters are supporters of a stupid president. I believe each has their own reasons. I suspect "us vs them" mentality and being anti-liberal to be the dominating reason.

I went to one of my favourite food take-away places, yesterday.
A "For Lease" sign was in the window.
It was a family business.
They must be on hard times now.
Pretty sad.

The political media source I watch made the comment that America is "Tearing itself apart due to partisanship". (Paraphrasing)
It is one of the 3 big problems of American society, imo.

While I like *some* of his policies,
Pressure on china, predominantly,
Trump is a goose, imo.
But, as I said recently elsewhere, there wasn't a great choice for the American people, at the time of the election.

My country suffers from partisanship, too. Our political scene is shaped by two center-right parties fueled purely by mutual hate.
At least our partisanship was not strong enough to disable coordinated covid response - but I wish we grew out of it.

I'm not sure "stupid" is the correct word...

Instead of the standard, career politician, who all act in a similar manner, being all stuck together in a bubble, isolated from the intrests\needs\wants of the "peasants", he comes from an entirely different "world", not having been indoctrinated in the "way things should be done).

Where a politician would be happy to throw money around (it's just a number, we can always print more), he works from a "business" outlook, trying to ensure "value" for the money spent.

Where a politician would be happy to look outward to other countries, seeking to build them up, he seems focused inward, preferring to try and help his country instead.

Where a politician has years to perfect political communication, he is new to it, and reverts to "business" type communication.

Where politicians have years to cosy up to the media, giving favors for preferential\friendly coverage, he came in without those back-room "understandings".

The problem\misunderstandings come from the expectation that he would operate in a similar way to every politician who came before him, when he was elected in order to do things differently by people who had had enough of politicians and how they worked.

Whether the decisions made have been good or bad (a subjective measure), at least he seems to have tried to keep as many promises as he has been able to (and more than many politicians manage).
