I am finding the whole thing frustrating and stupid. For one thing why do this now during a pandemic just because this is going on in the US. Secondly in America the demonstrators are asking for things such as the arrest of the men involved ect in the UK they are shouting don't shoot at police who are unarmed. One of the reasons UK police are not armed is because they have repeatedly voted against being routinely armed.

The reason to do it now is that they are more likely to get the attention that they have been asking for a long time, but no one will listen, so they realize that they have to do this during a pandemic to have people listen for once.

Maybe you are just assuming what the black person experience is in the UK.

fluffysaurus wrote:
Anyone interested can go on the BBC website there's an article and statistics, it's very interesting. Demonstrators are saying you are twice as likely to die in custody if you are black. However if you are arrested then you are 25% more likely to die if you are white. The higher number of black people dying as a proportion of the population comes down to their being more likely to be arrested in the first place it is not evidence they are being miss treated. Asians are less likely to be arrested that white people and when they are in custody less likely to die. What helps to make sense of these statistics is that two thirds of those who die in custody chock or suffocate due to something they have taken. It would be interesting to see how things lined up if those deaths were removed.

I can't say any of these statistics are true or without bias attached, but lets break down what this means. Considering your final bit of most likely to die in jail is dying from choking or suffocating due to taking something and connecting this to white people more likely to die, this would mean that a white person is more likely to only be from something like heavy substance abuse, while black people may be facing more petty reasons for being arrested. And yet somehow black people are still somehow dying as a higher proportion of the population, despite you referencing those who are white and arrested more likely to do so.

Looking at this government page, black people are 3 times more likely to be arrested than white people, it also says that Asians are at 12 per 1,000 people arrested, while whites are at 10. It becomes even more startling when you take gender into account, white men being 17 people arrested for every 1,000, while black men are at 64 people arrested for every 1,000, which means that black men are 3.8 times more likely to be arrested than a white man. And seems the only time Asians are arrested less than whites are women. This is all 2017/2018 statistics, so who knows if last year was more favourable.

fluffysaurus wrote:
Also stop and search (understandably unpopular) is more common in areas with high knife crime, these are also very urban areas and therefore have higher percentages of people who are not white. It would be useful to compare whether black lads are stopped more often than white lads, within these areas rather than against national statistics. If BLM want to make things better they should think of an alternative to stop and search that works to stop kids getting knifed (a BIG problem here, particularly for young black men).

Maybe it has been found that such frisking laws actually do little but build racial tension from getting harassed by officers, which I am going to take a guess will feel racially targeted. That they might not trust the people searching their body for no good reason?

fluffysaurus wrote:
A black person living in Lincolnshire (rural) is not going to experience stop and search.

Do you know what the experience is for black people in those rural areas? Do you know that they don't receive greater harassment from police, or old lady Sherry calling the police on the scary black boy running around?

Despite what the statistics say even though Asians are least likely to be arrested and least likely to die in custody there is being arrested and there is BEING ARRESTED. I would be most nervous of the police if I were an Asian male than anything else. An armed response unit breaking down the door would scare the s**t out of anyone whatever colour their skin is. I wouldn't be caught dead buying any kind of fertiliser and it would have to be minus 20 before I'd leave the house in a puffa jacket.

I kind of feels that there is some sort of weird profiling to even mention buying fertilizer and the jacket.

When a death of an innocent mans occurs due to a racial issue, it's time to put our health aside and stand up for what is right and risk our health.

Not everyone is able to attend the protests for obvious reasons (you live with elderly, have young kids at home, work, sensory issues with crowds, live in a rural area).

if you think this is ironic, you either don't care about black lives and the racial issue or you are naive and have been uneducated and our American system school sucks because they failed to teach us and our parents failed to teach us because their parents failed and so did their schools. You can't care about something if you were never made aware of it.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who sees the irony. Are these protesters the same people who were condemning the reopen protesters for endagering people?

I really do think that the BLM protesters have a noble cause but the virus won't care how noble their cause is. What they're doing is dangerous no matter how good their cause.

It's not just the protesters, everyone in the world is pretending now that the COVID-19 had just vanished.

Exactly Democracy depends upon free speech. And free speech cant be indefinitely put on hold for a virus.

Irony, or not.

And according to the experts there isn't even very much "irony" anyway because these marches aren't really that unhygienic pound for pound. The crowds wear masks, its outdoors, and they aren't even that close to each other. Not as bad as a Sanders rally, or Biden Rally, or especially a Trump rally (Trump supporters are more likely to not wear masks than supporters of the other two)would be - in which you have a bigger crowd and more crowded together.

And they are certainly not as dangerous as a traditional Democrat or GOP convention would be- where you would have large crowds confined together for long periods, and indoors on top of that.

Having said that ...yes I do wish that the marchers would stop chanting so much- and ejecting saliva droplets. And yes...their point has been made. They don't need keep on marching for ever.

I do wish that the POTUS could say something unifying- to mitigate the tension and thus the need for demonstrations.

But ofcourse Trump cant say anything unifying. And on top of that he cant say so "we are all outraged by what we saw in that video from Minnesota. So you can stop marching now and go back to staying in place at home" because he also wants us all to risk our lives by going back to work again. So its a conundrum.

Oh thank god racism and police brutality is over. That there is no reason to continue to try and pressure anything on a national level to bring change.

Was that before or after police forced protestors to be stuck on a bridge, or purposefully pull a protestor's mask off so they could pepper spray them, or take an umbrella off of a protestor so they could use it as an excuse to start attacking non violent protestors, or attack protestors, journalists and priests with shields, rubber bullets and tear gas so the president could get a photo standing in front of a church holding a bible up? Or any of the other hundreds of cases of police brutality being used against peaceful protestors?

They can stop and Donald Trump would totally do something about it just after he just recently got angry at people in the NFL saying that they now support peaceful protesting like kneeling. And not forget his message to the states in telling them to dominate protestors. This all regardless of the fact he has a totally different reactions to the protestors calling for Karen to be allowed to get a haircut.

There were no protests about reopening in the UK ( except on Facebook ) but there have been a lot of people not following Covid guidelines ( VE celebrations , packed beaches etc ) but the BLM protests seem to have been the biggest gathering so far.

And I've just seen on the news that hundreds of people have gathered to try and stop statues from being removed by BLM followers ( a statue in Bristol was pulled down recently ) - Covidiots the lot of them.

I am not sure about the puffer jacket, but fertilizer is can be used to make explosives.
I'm guessing fluffy saurus is thinking of south- and west-asian male, not east-asian.

I think the jacket and fertiliser was a separate statement not related to the Asian/police statistic. I didn't see it as racial profiling as Bradleigh suggested. Terrorists buy fertiliser and puffer jackets are popular in gang culture.

I agree there's an irony, though I also think the extent of these protests - despite the Covid-19 risk - show just how desperate people are for change.

Let's not forget that since Cummings' "accidental" demolition of the entire UK Covid-19 strategy, nobody has been paying nearly enough attention to social distancing anyway. I'm in a weird group between normal social distancing and shielding, whereby I can go out only when it's absolutely necessary provided I practice "particularly stringent social distancing". So basically I go out once a fortnight to buy food when the cupboards are bare. The flaw, of course, is that I know I need to be "extra stringent" but unless I wear a flashing beacon on my head no-one else does. However, everyone was being really good and generally polite and over-cautious until about a fortnight ago. Now, it's complete chaos, like everyone has instantly forgotten.

The protests in the UK are more about systematic racism, and to a lesser extent our colonial legacy and the continued wall of denial about that. But primarily: wealth inequality, debt, poverty, 'sink hole' estates, slum landlords, exposure to gang culture and organised crime, legal and illegal drug abuse, gambling, inequalities in education, employment, the benefits system, legal system etc. etc. etc. We've had equality legislation for years but (as with sex discrimination), racism is still rife, it just isn't written down. And that part gets ignored, in a smugly hypocritical fashion, although the statistics show it well enough. And obviously white people hold all the cards for change but most don't see any need, because of course they're never on the wrong end of it.

Personally I feel this runs deeper. Once you get into the predatory behaviour of multinational companies, both here and abroad, it turns into a class exploitation issue as well as a race issue. Lots of very uncomfortable very rich people at the moment, who are desperate for white folk not to start thinking too hard.
