This type of censorship *did* lead to one of the most memorable scenes in cinema, though… from "Little Ceasar":



Fun fact: He was originally supposed to say "Mother of God"... but this was also too sensitive for the censors… so they went with "Mother of Mercy" instead…

This was actually *pre* Hays Code (Little Ceasar was from 1931, and the Hays Code - although from 1930 - wasn't enforced until 1934), when Hollywood was trying to censor itself to avoid external censorship.

I thought that your point was that things were considered good, and presumably are good, but are now being considered not because of certain aspects considered problematic, just for having things that were not considered a problem at the time, things outside of its control, and perhaps even had good intentions at the time. But I also think that you are taking things too personally over criticisms of older media.

Learning the context of old media is a worthy endeavor, always good to learn from the past, but I also think that one should be careful not to simply glorify the past. Because the past was not simply just total freedom, in fact there were greater restrictions, you just need to look up the sort of stuff that was politically incorrect for being perverse.
