He's hardly a pleasant personality or someone to be described as a statesman. All the most honoured statesmen had some charm - Gandhi, Mandela, Churchill etc. He said he would be a president for all Americans yet seemingly wants to divide the US like never before. He takes pleasure in destroying the legacy of the former president - entirely out of spite. He admits he'd like to rig the results in November - the kind of thing a paranoid cult leader would say. He doesn't respect women and I'm surprised any females would be happy to vote for him.

Some of Mr Reinhard's points may be true but even the most charmless people can put on an act of charity and compassion when needed for brownie points.

@DE: I don't get the reference to "he who walks behind the rows" - is it a movie reference I should know?

Trump wants to usurp our democracy and serve for the rest of his life.

He wants to be the CEO of the US.

I hear that he is a racist all the time but as of yet iv'e not been given any sources of those claims.

He intentionally lied about the dangers of the coronavirus which has resulted in hundreds of thousands of American deaths. He's encouraging his base to react violently towards the opposite party. He's also turned the Republican party into a cult.

A horror movie based off a Stephen King short story.

Such irony in that statement.

Our Democracy was usurped a very long time ago by the oligarchs. That's why we're in this mess.

Oh yeah you reminded me just how dire his handing of the virus is. I actually forgot about how hopeless that was. His stigma for being an absolute embodiment of a human dumpster predates his very poor handling of the virus by a long time though. I don't really know much about him turning his party into a cult and claims like that seem hard to prove or disprove anyway. They are after all a political party and members of his party are by nature going to share the same political views just like members of other parties. I personally think both left and right have been digging their heels in more and more over recent years as a response to the other and I think that might have been why he got into power in the first place. I have a similar view to how the conservatives won here (basically the UK version of the republicans). They won with a landslide after the other main party basically went full socialist and the working class turned their backs on them for the first time in 100 years as a result.

I agree, but why are so many Americans too dense to see this?

They actually believe Trump was chosen by God to lead the world. Some are openly admitting that they hope he will start Armageddon. You don't call that cult-like behavior?

It's not a matter of being dense, I dont think. It's just that were constantly being assaulted by propaganda via the corporate media.

I guess you're right. Everything in America is political propaganda nowadays, which is why I hardly watch movies or TV anymore.

Surprising how much they go for him - perhaps they see him as "lesser of two evils". Certainly he can't be seen as particularly religious except when it suits him.

I see names are appearing here again in a thread stating "he who must not be named" - which sounds deliciously Lovecraftian.

Are those people just random members of the public who support him though?

To answer the question of why is he so “disliked”:

In the US, we don’t just have freedom of speech etc in our laws, but it’s deeply engrained in our culture. We believe our diversity makes us stronger. We openly argue here about things that other cultures either have a collective agreement upon, or a distaste for open discussion about. We are fairly comfortable arguing with each other and openly expressing ourselves. It may seem hostile to other cultures, but it’s actually considered healthy and normal for American culture.

Years ago, I had some ESL students from more closed countries. One from Syria and one from Cuba. They were both uncomfortable and disturbed by the way Americans openly criticize our government. And this was during the Obama years.
