Amen used alone is a sexist word now, use Awomen too.

I'm sorry...what? Ok. This has to be a hoax, or why stop there? The US may as well just deport all women named Mandy in the name of political correctness.

This whole thing puts me in mind of Victor Borge's "inflationary language"...

According to the Independent (U.K.):

Quote:
The lawmaker from Missouri, who is also an ordained United Methodist priest, says he tweaked the traditional prayer ending to recognise the record number of women serving in the 117th Congress.

...

"With this conversation, in the presence of the 117th House of Representatives, I concluded with a light-hearted pun in recognition of the record number of women who will be representing the American people in Congress during this term as well as in recognition of the first female Chaplain of the House of Representatives, whose service commenced this week," said Mr Cleaver in a statement.

Note his reference to "a-women" as a "light-hearted pun." As an ordained United Methodist priest, he almost certainly does know what the word "amen" means, and is not seriously advocating the idea that "amen" is a sexist term.

These people have gone mental. Or is it womental?

Plus, wouldn't a-men actually mean "without men" or "not men"?

Actually ...it seems that I was wrong. From this clip it looks like he used "amen and awomen" in all seriousness, and not as a put-on (to make fun of the new gender neutral rule, like I thought). 8O

Indeed he says it in a rather deadpan way. But I would hesitate to draw any conclusion just from his apparent manner. Let's look at the context.

As an ordained Methodist minister, I'm sure he is very familiar with what the word "amen" means and its derivation. Mainline Protestant clergy do study Hebrew, Greek, and Latin in seminary. So it's highly unlikely that he really thinks "amen" really has anything to do with "men," except as a pun. So I see no reason not to take his own explanation at face value.

My guess is that this was just a spontaneous, not-very-well-thought out gesture to mark the occasion of there now being a record number of women in Congress.

Guessing the eggs are supposed to look like balls but it's strange since it's females who have eggs.

In some languages, you say "eggs" for "balls".

Not a great source.

Would be stupid if it happened.

But I don't think it does happen.

If people are saying that kind of thing in seriousness, ignore them.

Set off wondering last night if they use the same word for balls and human eggs? I could see using the same word for balls and ovaries since they do a similar job.
