I was thinking that the way the world is now, for people in the spotlight, there often is very little forgiveness by the papers/media and by those who follow them.

Does anyone else feel that the power of the press to ruin people over very little has gone too far? Or do you think that the journalists (who are almost always profiting from others hardship) right in terms of attacking everyone they can to make money?

Mob violence through weaponised political correctness, sanctimony, self-righteousness and virtual-signalling, on twitter and facebook.
Don't forget them. 8)

I find it hard to forgive politicians for promoting harmful policies for political gain, because (in general) they will never admit they are wrong but always double down on their views.
They hold so much power that I believe they need to be held to a higher standard.
If there's no recognition of wrong-doing and an apology, how can there be forgiveness?

But for other people, yeah, modern social media tends to over-inflate responses and they can be crucified in a very fast and powerful way, just for saying something thoughtless or ignorant.
Not sure what the answer is, and how we can protect people from this kind of firestorm of condemnation.

It is hard to forgive someone who claims that they have done nothing wrong, so why bother?

I don't know, I have some sympathy for people who get crucified on social media for saying something that goes against the current zeitgeist of political correctness, when they were only trying to engage in open discussion. As long as what they were saying does not comprise hate speech or incite harm towards others.

I have little sympathy for people who go on social media, in the first place.
Do they enjoy involving themselves with an intellectually devoid, emotionalistic embracing dystopia? 8O

Is WP not social media, of a sort?
Even here, it can be quite upsetting when lots of people are against your views. It can quickly get personal.
And I see this as a relatively safe space, compared to Twitter and the like.

Get in line - first should be the families of people who have died because what Trump has done (e.g. his pretend bankruptcies resulting in suicides, the families of people who have died of COVID-19) and families of those who injected themselves with Lysol after listening to what he said.

"Modern" as opposed to ...what other era exactly?

To Biblical times? To Victorian times? To the mid 20th century? earlier times within the living memory of the original poster? To ten years ago? To eight weeks ago?

When exactly was this golden age when folks were more forgiving?

The original poster offers no time frame.

And he doesnt offer a single example of anything he is talking about.

No examples of forgiveness in former times, and no counter examples of unforgiveness today.

You would expect him to have said something like: "Person X got caught doing such and such in 1890, and was forgiven. But present day modern person Y got caught doing the same thing and we dont forgive him."

But no. He does mention any specific examples.

So none of us can have a clue as to WTF he is on about.

I suggest that we give the original poster 24 hours to post a list of specifics to illustrate, or ...we lock the thread for being an invalid discussion.

I'm a Christian, so I believe in forgiveness no matter what...but the orange ape is sure making it difficult, as he has pretty much proven that he thinks of the deaths of hundreds of thousands of people as collateral for fulfilling his personal agenda. I'm not entirely sure if I feel bad for people dumb enough to actually think injecting themselves with Lysol was a good idea just because the President suggested it, but the rest of those people didn't deserve what happened to them.

While you raise a good point, calling for the locking of this thread might be a bit harsh. This is the ASD forum, afterall. If it were me, I'd prefer criticism to be framed more constructively than condescendingly.

It is true that a good old-fashioned hanging was the opposite of forgiveness, for sure. Fun fact: death by gallows is the only time when the word hanged is the correct past tense of the word hang.

I do sorta get what the OP is talking about.

There is always manure hitting the fan.

But it does seem like there is more manure hitting the fan in the last few years than before.

Things go in cycles. Less yellow journalism, and then more yellow journalism.

And now there is more media than more. Internet media on top of print and broadcast. Any yahoo can stat a Utube channel and can either uncover real scandal, or make up fictitious scandal.

Here's a clue: Intolerant people use the word "homeland." The home is ruled by a benign dictator, because the children need one, there just is not time for formal justice, and because a mother will do her best, hoping for grandchildren. The "land" is the realm of adult peers, who have to discuss the facts and consider many opinions. However, people keep trying to take the sense of authority they feel at home, and dictate the truth to others outside, as if they were children, and they also feel free to discriminate against anyone who does not seem like family.

If he survives all his law suites then he will have his money to cushion his fall. He's a narcissist so he will go to his grave not caring about the pain he has put his country through.

Context, my dear woman. 8)
We I wasn't talking about online forums.

I don't get upset with others who disagree with my point of view.
Neither does Brictoria.
I have a problem when people forgo manners/civil-behaviour and resort of snarky, sarcastic, irrational emotion-fuelled tantrums.

Like Brictoria, I actually enjoy the challenge of being verbally attacked by a hoard.
It reminds me of the TV series called Shintaro, where this one master swordsman would battle a dozen ninjas, and prevail.

My sword of rational Truth is a match for multiple irrational arguments :ninja:

His money is all credit. He's got a $400 million loan coming due, and his revenue has tanked. He's been running major scams like forcing the Secret Service to pay huge hotel bills and stealing campaign donations to make minimum payments.

I believe that forgiveness should only be given on acknowledgment of what was wrongly done, and a sign of not doing so again or an act to counter what they were a part of.

Someone who was homophobic in the past can surely be worthy of forgiveness if they no longer believe so and do not allow homophobia anymore. But a person who performed some sort of war crime when they were in power, there is not a whole lot to make up for that, especially if they have not acknowledged it. In fact people who try to essentially forgive people of past crimes such as whitewashing them when it is not earned, are actually worthy of some criticism themselves, this is one thing that was pushed towards Ellen after she was acting buddy with Bush.

Trump probably should own every crime that he did a pardon of. The man gave a pardon to a militia group for slaughtering innocent citizens.

I would say that we are getting more forgiving in ways than we did in the past, of course more than ever there is available documented information that can reveal someone's skeletons. I do think that as usual people are looking at the past with rose tinted glasses to think that the past was better.

I don't think I can ever forgive the Allies for eisenhauer's death camps or the man-made famine created in Germany during the 2 years after WWII.
