It is as if QAnon was some strange Doomsday Cult, and their flying saucers failed to show up on time.

Do not worry, their "prophets" will just push back the date ("Oops!  We slipped a decimal point!"), and some other chain of events will get them all riled up again.

I almost feel sorry for them. Some will realize they've been duped and feel like fools the rest of their lives, or they'll double down on the delusion bc their egos can't handle admitting how foolish they are.

Just as long as none of them go killing people.

But I don’t have a lot of faith in that happening. There are some very imbalanced unhinged people in the Qcult. So, unfortunately, it won’t surprise me if people die over this stuff.

Yes, it is easy to have sympathy for those who have returned to reality; at least they know they have been duped and may regret it.  Just give them a hug and tell them it is going to be alright.

It is the ones who double-down and make up excuses that are even weirder than their initial assumptions that have me worried...

i wonder if the systematic dumbing down of public education played a big part? if the social networks in some form existed in the 30s and 40s, would the population back then behave similarly?

I do not think so.  If you consider (as I do) QAnon as a modern-day doomsday cult, and then look back on past "Doomsday" prophesies by various religious groups, you may see a lot of similarities.

In my opinion QAnon is a doomsday cult wherein Donald Trump is the Chosen One who will drive out the unbelievers, smite his enemies, take over America, and usher in a new era of peace and prosperity for all of those who believe in him, and those who do not believe in him will be deported, sent to prison, or executed.

Of course, none of that happened on Inauguration Day, so many QAnon believers have woken up to reality -- Trump is not the Chosen One, and he is no longer in charge.

I respectfully disagree: Facebook is not inherently bad, there are just bad people who make it look that way.  The World-Wide-Web is an appropriate name, in that just like a spider's web, you will find a lot of nasty-looking things sticking to it.

Given that many of these Capital rioters were wealthy, that indicates these were alll educated and they had degrees so they were actually smart people but how does someone with a normal IQ believe in something so stupid?

That is a mystery that even the best of minds seem capable of only speculating upon.

Why do seemingly intelligent people believe that:

• Every unidentified object in the sky has extraterrestrial origins?
• Every unexplainable event has either supernatural or conspiratorial origins?
• Strangers have nothing better to do than to telepathically read their minds?
• If they only pray and believe hard enough, they can make miracles happen?
• Anyone speaking in a foreign language is talking about them?
