Correct.

I know "Major Tom" (who talks to ground control in the David Bowie song). But not the captain.

Sir Captain Tom Moore was a 99-year-old who walked around his garden 100 times to raise money for the NHS last year. He was also a war veteran.

I know him!

He walked thousands of miles and raises many pounds for COVID relief.

He recently passed away at 100.

He was a WW 2 veteran.

Ahh ... a tabloid ... I think we can all do better without them, and anyone who posts comments through them.

Boycotting businesses and ghosting people is more my style, since trying to get someone cancelled can backfire, especially if they are famous or popular.

No worries, KT.  My apologies to you.

It's not in a tabloid.

It's on twitter.

No such thing as left wing tabloids in this country.

It's on my twitter TL. He hasn't padlocked the account but I still consider that private-ish.

I blocked the guy.

The only remotely left wing papers in the UK are the Morning Star (which could be a tabloid for all I know - communist paper only sold in certain cities, I've never actually read it) and the left of centre Guardian. The Times is centrist. BBC news is centrist & pretty reliable: that's where I'd go to for most news coverage since it's supposed to be impartial and only cover the facts. The Telegraph is right wing but an actual respectable newspaper. Then there's a bunch of right wing tabloids which are useless in anything other than stirring up hate and gossip now they can't be used as fish and chip shop paper.

If someone who was famous was tweeting it, I'd link the tweet. But the guy has even fewer followers than me  He doesn't need the pile on, just needs telling privately 'that's s**t taste' which two of us told him. Four other ppl told him he was funny for saying it.

I just generally/genuinely wanted to know why someone would tweet that. Even if Captain Tom is being used as a pawn by Tories who want to cut the NHS - doesn't make him a bad person. I hope we don't turn the NHS into a charity and normalise this stuff but if we do, those raising charitable donations will be good people. I wish America had more charity fundraisers for people who can't afford medical fees - at least that way they're not going without much needed care or going bankrupt over being ill.

My thoughts on twitter is that a lot of people have contrary opinions on there just to have them. Which annoys me since I'm a pretty earnest person who genuinely tweets actual opinions and expects others to do the same. It's probably an aspie/NT divide or even an honest person/attention seeker divide.

Know or know of?

If know then he was a hero! And I'm sorry for your loss.

If know of then I'm glad his story is finally making it across the pond :)

Know of....I wish he were my grandpa.

Sorry. He couldn’t have been a WW One veteran. He would have had to be about 118 years old, minimum. And he would have had to lie about his age.

My grandfather would have been 121 years old this year. He was born in 1900. He was 18 at the end of World War One.

I think America is so hung up on ex-president Donald Trump that what goes on in other countries is rather unknown.

Not aiming it at anyone personally, it's just America in general.

I make sure to keep up with the world news.

One of my special interests is geography. Another is cultural anthropology.

I know it wasn’t directed at me....but wanted to put in my Tuppence, nevertheless :P

I think that was true when he was in the headlines for what he was doing.

A surprising amount of Americans on Reddit have only heard of him after his death.

Makes sense. Even in our elections things get a bit provincial. American elections last forever...

Captain Tom seems like a likeable person to me.

I cant imagine why anyone would hate him.

I have no problem with Captain Tom whatsoever. What he achieved in the last year of his life was truly remarkable. Let's not forget that he was a war veteran who proudly served his country when it needed him and the fact that even at his advanced age, he still felt that he could help contribute to the greater good of all in a time of great crisis speaks volumes about the kind of man that he was.

I read his story at the time he was doing the garden walking to raise funds for the British NHS. He was a true hero to many people in the UK I'm sure. I'm sorry to hear he has passed away. He lived to a ripe age but it seems he developed Covid and succumbed to pneumonia. His story won't be forgotten.

Good people attempting to have a positive effect on our society are routinely demonized by the ruling class. They don't like it when the failures of neoliberalism get exposed.

Acts such as Captain Tom's should not be politicized. Too many things are ruined by trying to bring politics into them. What he did, rises far above the banality of politics.

Captain Tom was a patriot with solid values.

He should not be used for political purposes.

Captain Tom is a British war hero who helped put an end to WWII. I have a great admiration for him. Imagine the type of world we would live in if there was no Captain Tom.
