Hmm. Supermarkets stock their shelves with cheap, mid-pricedvand exceedingly expensive products, betting that most people have no criterion for quality but the price. They don't want to feel cheap for buying the cheap stuff, and they don't want to get ripped off, so they buy the stuff in the mid-price range - it's the choice you can't go wrong with.

So, is the middle between a conservative party and a fascist party the right choice?
- "the middle" is defined by the extremes. The US for example doesn't offer a economically left choice in politics - so the middle must be between the neoliberal Democrats and the neoliberal Republicans, right?

The middle is defined by opposite extremes, not two extremes on the same end of a spectrum.

The spectrum is defined by the extremes.

In the US, the parties *call* each other extreme names - communists and fascists, respectively. They create the aesthetics of political extremes. They say things like "across the political spectrum".
So, people without proper education or interest in the matter assume these *are* the extremes, and they don't want to get fooled, so they say they're somewhere in the middle.
