The author of Revelations was writing about his own time in the First Century AD. But every generation in the last 2000 has used the book a metaphor for their own time, or often even taken it literally as being about their own time.

According to the Dead Sea Scrolls, the number is actually 616 (which is an area code in Michigan!).
Some theorize that it's a secret code referring to Nero.

Are they sure that's what he looks like? Did they work from a photo? Do goats count as "beasts"? No wonder goats get bad publicity in the scriptures...

The origin of jewish satan comes from dieties from Ur of the Chaldees, the Assyrians and Egyptians in the old testament where many dieties had horns (like Baal) and rams heads (Amun-Ra).

If your question is serious, I think it's something that one accepts that flags oneself as in the non-Jesus or Jesus-rejecting group. It might be something physical, as in the little scripture boxes Jews wore on their forehead and hand (which is where the Mark of the Beast is supposed to end up). But it could also be something not actually physical. Old Testament Jews wore the boxes to mark themselves as part of God's "team", but the New Testament is clear that the outer marks no longer apply, but rather, the inner ones are what counts. So it could end up being who one aligns their mind, heart, soul, and strength with.

Some say that the Mark Of The Beast will be a special tattoo that must be read (scanned) before you can purchase anything, from a glass of water to a house.  Others expound on this idea and point to the chips that some people have placed under their dogs skin to identify them if they should be lost or stolen.  Some people are even getting these chips implanted under their own skin to facilitate electronic check-outs at the grocery store.

All of this implies (to some people) that The Beast is a global data-communications network...

Yes. If you go by the text of the Bible it would be something like a tattoo. Like the serial number that the Nazis tattooed onto the arms of the concentration camp prisoners. But in our 21st centurey world it could be a barcode like the UPC barcodes that they have on every product you buy in the store. They would tattoo it onto your thumb, or forehead. And you would be allowed to buy and sell stuff, otherwise you wouldnt be allowed to. They would zap your tattoo with a laser gun attached to a device- and your name would come up, and data about you would come up on the device(like when they zap your can of soup at the check out the store's data base comes up with the identity of the product, what that store is charging for that product at that time, and the description of the product, etc).

Actually Steve Bannon doesnt even wear Ralph Lauren. In fact he doesnt even shave!
