Ancient peoples sought to understand calamities, and so they supposed God had caused said calamities to punish people for wrong doing.
But Jesus clearly taught how some people who were killed when a tower fell hadn't died because God disapproved of them. Rather, he said, "The rain falls on the just and unjust." Or, to put it in more modern terms: "Sh*t happens."
