If the victims bought into anti-vax disinformation and lost their lives because of it, then of course I blame them. Yelling "Fire" in a crowded theater is hardly the same as spreading disinformation. Nobody has to listen to the crackpots and it's their responsibility to educate themselves.

So ... you seem to believe that it is not the liar's fault for telling a lie, but the hearer's fault for believing it -- you seem to believe that it is right and proper to blame victims, and not the people who victimized them.

Yelling "Fire!" in a crowded theater when there is no fire is "disinformation"; it is also a lie, and the person yelling "Fire" can be held criminally liable and should be banned from the theater.

Telling people that vaccines are ineffective against the coronavirus is disinformation; it is also a lie, and the person spreading the "disinformation" should be held criminally liable, or at least banned from privately-owned websites.

Defending the spread of "disinformation" by citing free speech is the same as claiming that the most compelling thing you can say in defense of spreading "disinformation" is that it is literally not illegal to spread "disinformation".

I'm not sure if it's really censorship when it's just as likely to be motivated by CYA culture and liability concerns.

Unfortunately one of the problems is that if it looks like censorship it will likely just feed into the paranoia the disinfo peddlers already have. There doesn't seem to be a good way to reach the dupes and the shills work in bad faith.

Removing the spread of disinfo from their platforms primarily limits the platforms liability for having helped spread it. I wouldn't be so sure they're actually concerned about how their actions impact the spread of the disinformation. It seems fair to assume they're aware of the potential for Streisand effect but also know that impact isn't one they can be considered responsible for.

Even ignoring potential liabilities of that sort it's not unreasonable that people within these companies might feel a moral responsibility to remove harmful disinformation from their site, as is their prerogative. Not everyone wants to enable hucksters and snake oil salesmen under the guise of free speech.

I thought this was a very good opinion piece, from Newsweek no less, about why we should be very alarmed at what is happening. Again, we should be very concerned about who is doing the censoring and the poltical motivations behind it.
