yes! this is not only not sexist, it's also not as speciesist as "fish-".
My personal suggestion would have been Seapeople.

I like Seapeople. It reminds me as if they actually live on the sea with all their family.

"Fishers" is problematic because there are fur bearing animals in the north woods (related to martens and weasels) that are called "fishers". And also it would sound like you're talking about "fissures" (cracks in the ground caused by earthquakes).

Don’t they call them fishers sometimes in the UK?

Not that I know of. It'll be interesting to see what a female fisher"man" would be called.

I think the term fisherman was only widely accepted because at the time men dominated fishing and pretty much still do. For a genuine shift in terms to be accepted I think the sexes working in the profession need to be equalised a bit more first.

Exactly. Even the most stubborn old fossil will put up little fight to a change of the term "binman" if a flood of women entered the profession.

Same goes with "fisherman" I would assume.

I think the whole concept is stupid.

When we see men doing the job of collecting the bins they are binmen. When we see women doing the same thing they are binwomen. Simple. It is stupid to change things.

Yeah I get that but when you're talking about them do you say binmen and women?

Or just bin people?

"Bin man" was never even a term here in the States.

Trash collector, garbage man, or sanitation worker, are used.

No American would know WTF you were talking about if you said "bin man".

Yes

Sounds a bit like an insult as well. I remember someone calling me a bin bag on the "rude" thread.

Yeah...that would make a great epithet, even here in the States (where we dont even know what it means). :D

Kinda like when Don Rickles says "you hockey puck!".

f**k PC but if using "Fisherman" is going to cost me dearly "Fish catcher" is pretty good because it is literal.
