I wanted to add that the urge to expect overt warfare is strong, but what if it ends up being passive? How many of us are dependent on medicine made in China? What if they just stopped? How many lives would be lost? Then, what if it's the water they go after next?

^ that might work in the future, but the die is cast for everyone living in the US now. They aren't going to ask you your political leanings at this point. They might scare you into submission, if they let you live. But given the things you find intolerable, I doubt you'll do well as a slave in a commune.

If they cut off our meds...they would also cut off much of their own income. They depend upon us just like we depend upon them. We could cutoff sending them soybeans in retaliation.

Yes, that's true. There are theories on Youtube that the recent train crashes are in fact explosions, killing fish in the creeks and polluting the water. Not sure if that's true, just putting it out there.

1. Chinas military is seriously overrated by outsiders. To actually pose a threat to you, they would need to get Taiwan first, otherwise their navy is hemmed in by Taiwan and Japan. Wake me up after they invade.

2. I never said "ignore them." I favor facing them, but my they aren't going to get to world domination.

I find it difficult to discuss things with people that read way more into what I said than I said, and then toss in the casual insult implying I don't keep up with events.

The risk isn't that China will take over the world (it can't).

The risk is that it will try, and in so doing, cause a huge (potentially nuclear) conflagration.

(To be clear, I'm basically agreeing with you, just emphasizing that China is a real danger, but not in the way some people think it is).

I'm half-Asian. That doesn't make my brain so much vastly different from yours.

China's never taken over the world, either. You know why? Because they're a huge country with a huge population, which means they need to spend the majority of their efforts just holding together. Why do you think most of the colonization was done by European countries? It's because they were typically pretty small and nimble. Empires never qualify for that.

Further, China has a history of cyclic ups and downs. Do you think there's some kind of "eternal Chinaman" looking out at the world, growing influence that steadily accumulates over the millennia? No! Every dynasty has fallen after a period of time, usually because of serious internal stressors (bad weather, rebellion, maybe ridiculous housing costs). Occasionally, it's because of external invasions. And yeah, that means the next dynasty has to spend a lot of time fixing things up, and doesn't necessarily continue all the policies of the previous dynasty! The Tang Dynasty was actually quite cosmopolitan, with large Persian and Sogdian populations living throughout China. But obviously this changed. It could change again. China's not some static monolith.

I am so tired of this ignorant, ahistorical BS being used to stereotype so many groups of people.

The Biden administration is scrambling to get a major computer chip industry established in Ameriaa.
THAT is one of the reasons Tawain is so important to the world.
"We" don't want to be at the mercy of China in that regard.

BTW, "computer" chip exports to China have been suspended already from Amerria, IIRC.
It is an exceedingly important strategic resource.
Hence, one of the reasons the CCP is interested in "annexing" Tawain sooner rather than later.

European is not a nation state, it's a collection of empires born from highly individualistic warrior cultures who expanded at the end of a gun. Same with Arab, Turkish and other empires who expanded by the sword. As history has shown, each specific empire was limited by being able to manage their empire and quell rebellion within their borders and (most critically) redistribute resources across long distances in short spaces of time to. The latter spelled the death knell for the Greek and Roman empires of the past, and ultimately spelled the end for the British empire.

The reasons why they did not expand beyond their current borders was specific emperors chose to be insular and prevented it's own citizens from leaving. At specific historic periods the Chinese had the world's largest navy, a huge military, gun powder and one of the most organised administered governments in the world who kept meticulous records.

During these periods of isolation, China was left behind when Europe had it's renaissance. China and Japan chose to learn from Europe and it's no accident that they adopted communism which Mao Tse Tung used effectively "hold the huge population together", Today China barely resembles the ancient kingdom that had a continuous culture for 2000 years, Like Japan, modern China looks like a clone of the west. In this new era of global capital, China is now the biggest player, set to overtake the US in several years.
