The Mormons believe God has a wife but he keeps her name secret so we won’t blaspheme her name.

The themes of Israel turning to foreign gods like asherah are written into most of the old testament. It happens again and again (due to our nature of finding it difficult to commit to one thing).

Also, the theme of Israel's enemies coming and defeating them when they stop worshipping Yahweh is in the old testament many times.

Asherah wouldn't have been a foreign god. I know that the theme of Israel's/Judah's enemies repeatedly coming and defeating them when they stop worshiping Yahweh properly is one of the old testament's major themes. But, my suspicion is that, at the time the Old Testament was being finalized, the leaders wanted to go with absolute monotheism--a single, male God, who had a special relationship with the Jewish people. The leaders ascribed various tragedies that the Israelites and Jews suffered to not worshiping satisfactorily. They seemed to have been editing materials that included a number of references to God's wife, and deliberately put her in a bad light. The writers weren't historians, like Herodotus. They were religious people, and had their own agenda.

So due to that I'm certain it is sarcasm, also if you only read Jeremiah itself you'll see that.

You choose to view the passage as sarcasm, because a literal reading would not fit your preferred narrative.

You can tell them that we do know her name. It is Asherah.

It's best if you actually read Jeremiah before coming to a conclusion about it.

It's only fifty or so chapters and each chapter takes about 10-15 minutes to read.

I read it and the entire Bible. I was profoundly underwhelmed with the experience, but some parts are okay.

Elsewhere in Jeremiah 44 wrote:

But we will certainly do whatsoever thing goeth forth out of our own mouth, to burn incense unto the queen of heaven, and to pour out drink offerings unto her, as we have done, we, and our fathers, our kings, and our princes, in the cities of Judah, and in the streets of Jerusalem: for then had we plenty of victuals, and were well, and saw no evil.

But since we left off to burn incense to the queen of heaven, and to pour out drink offerings unto her, we have wanted all things, and have been consumed by the sword and by the famine.

And when we burned incense to the queen of heaven, and poured out drink offerings unto her, did we make her cakes to worship her, and pour out drink offerings unto her, without our men?

They're saying that their bad luck derived from not burning incense, pouring drink offerings, and making cakes for Asherah.

Isn't there already the concept of Shekinah? I guess that sort of parallels Shakti and The Holy Spirit, ie. diffuse rather than direct. Agreed with others though that a) it won't make sense if Asherah is as bronze age in her temperament as El and b) besides - why not just do something other than exoteric Abrahamism?

Quote:

The union between God and his shekinah. Intercourse between man and his wife is recommended for Jews on the eve
of the Sabbath. Human intercourse-as it were-imitates the intercourse of the Holy One with the Shekinah. The union
between the Shekinah and the Holy One is the main purpose of the sacrifices. The union of the Shekinah with the Holy One is remarkable in the high priest's worship on Yom Kippur. At his entrance to the Holy of Holies, he heard the voice of the wings of the cherubim being lifted for intercourse. The destruction of the temple brought the separation between her and her love God. Holy of Holies is pictured as the holy couple's bed-chamber, and, indeed, as we will see, we find in rabbinic sources that the poles of the Holy Ark were seen as two breasts of a woman, and the Holy of Holies appears as a place of communion for the Holy One and the Shekinah.

I remember the bit about intercourse between a man and his wife on the eve of the Sabbath coming up in the movie Disobedience.

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt6108178/

The wife is a lesbian, and she gives her husband sex out of a sense of duty, on the eve of the Sabbath.

Here's a good resource:
https://bible.knowing-jesus.com/phrases/Asherah-Poles

It shows that God hates the asherah poles, and that the same narrative is consistent across the old testament.

The bit where the Israelites think asherah is bringing them good luck is when they are mistaken.

God seems quite inconsistent.

Jews get clobbered for worshiping Asherah as their Queen of Heaven.

But, Catholics can worship Mary as their Queen of Heaven, all they want, and nothing bad ever happens to them.

Catholics have the fear of Hell.

In essence you are saying you think other people should be as superstitious as you are.

I haven't seen any Mormons in a while.

The Jehovah's Witnesses get active this time of year. Easter is the only holiday they celebrate.
