I didn't choose to be born with original sin so it would be immoral to punish me for it.

It might not be popular to say, but looking at human history, of how we are relentlessly cruel to one another, and how our species are aliens in our own world to the point of destroying our own environment, I think there's something rotten in human nature that gets passed down from one generation to the next.
That said, I still believe the Almighty sees us as salvageable.

The Eden story is packed with explanations about how snakes lost their legs, how people became jerks, how nudity became embarrassing, why we reproduce and die instead of just living forever, how knowledge can be dangerous. But I think we have more reliable maps of these things now, and no longer have to settle for explanations that raise more questions than they answer.

I guess a modern answer to "how did people become jerks?" would be that hunter-gatherers depended on each other's co-operation more than the later farming types. Perhaps the Eden story is a blurred relic of the way the knowledge of agriculture messed up the fellowship of the human race.

I agree there seems to be something intrinsically negative about humans, at least those that have lived until today, in general anyway. Obviously there are exceptions to the rule.

I can relate to that as a gut reaction, but negativity is a relative concept, so what are we comparing the human race to? They're negative compared to how I'd prefer them to be, so if my preference is removed, they simply are what they are. And I know of many humans who are every bit as harmless and kind as I could reasonably expect them to be.

I think it is one of the biggest factors that contributed to my childhood depression. As as in addition to that I was told since eve encouraged adam to eat the apple, women were more sinful then men and having painful periods and birth is our 'punishment'. Not exactly a positive message for a young girl to grow up with.
