It seems like there's socially unacceptable mental illness, and socially acceptable mental illness, and the difference largely comes down to how people perceive it rather than how much harm it causes society.

I can sum up one mental illness that appears to be accepted in American society but really should not be in one word: Narcissism

I agree, but I also believe narcissism is too commonly invoked when people wish to dismiss disagreements or social conflict.

People invoke narcissism to dismiss the notion that their opponent might be raising a valid criticism of their behaviour or attitudes. It often seems like an attempt at employing DARVO, whether in whole or in part.

If everyone one encounters is a narcissist, that one needs to take a long look in the mirror because the common factor in all their interactions will be looking right back at them.

My apologies I didnt mean to imply that every American is a narcissist. What I meant was that we live in a culture that rewards Narcissism. At least that's the conclusion I've come to after people like Kevin Spacey, Bill Cosby, and especially Donald Trump got off easy for crimes like rape. The two things they have in common is their wealth and their big fanbases. It feeds their ego and many Americans even seem to admire these scumbags more after they get off easy for crimes that the rest of us would get nearly life in prison for.

It's the reason why I no longer keep up with Hollowood. They helped breed these monsters.

American culture seems to encourage people to also behave like the victims of narcissists, always looking for the next cult leader to make themselves subservient to.

It's one of the funniest things about the self-proclaimed alpha males, how quickly they fall into a hierarchy and accept being loyal foot soldiers/cult members to people higher in the pecking order.

It makes me wonder how much fundamentalist churches and authoritarian parenting styles play into the development of those sorts of personalities.

That too is a very good point about us. It also reminds me of the young girls like my niece who obsess on wanting to be Disney Princesses. I don't think that's particularly healthly for young girls in this country. But maybe we all need better role models? Girls need less examples of toxic femininity and boys need less examples of toxic masculinity.

Although that might be too judgemental of me...

Even if some people might find it too judgmental, it still might be true or partially true.

I don't think it's wrong to point out the role role models play in people's development.
