Hmm. Then perhaps the Phoenix lights were just a B2 bomber (not a prototype thereof) which happened to be flying around for some undisclosed reason?

Or perhaps an experimental aircraft of some other kind (not a B2) that was still secret then?

I mean its possible (and in all likelihood) its a black project funded in secret. But why fly it in broad view of the people of Arizona?

^^^ According to the DoD:
The B-2 Spirit stealth bomber is known for its low observability, which includes reduced noise levels. While not completely silent, its design and engine placement help minimize its acoustic signature, making it significantly quieter than other bombers.

Like the Stealth it flies at high altitude. In contrast witnesses reported seeing a large, triangular object with lights passing low overhead, estimated at 100 to 150 feet (30 to 46 meters) over Phoenix. Definitely not a spy plane trying to evade detection.

... unless maybe its navigation was somehow malfunctioning? Maybe it was off its intended course, for whatever reason?

we had in an incident in Melbourne Australia in 1966
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Westall_UFO

about 200 school kids saw a flying saucer land on school grounds. It took off and planes followed it...

My parents told me the story, all pandemonium broke out, television crews, police, fire emergency, army all converged on the school. Children and teachers were interviewed.

the next day the school was shocked to learn no record of the event existed. the tv station film reels were missing, police, fire and army had no record of the incident. ethe local airport has no record of planes in the area.

So I am open to the idea the US military was testing secret craft and it went off course but how the heck did we have flying saucers with no form of propulsion that can move silently from 0 to disappearing in a split second in 1966??

How did we have flying triangles in Arizona in 1997?
