The person you call "a washed up politician" is a former U.S. vice-president. He also won the popular vote when he ran for president himself.

al gore didnt discover global warming, didnt coin the term global warming, (that would have been nobel peace prize worthy, if HE actually discoverd it) but rather made a movie about it..

The prize was shared between the IPCC and Gore. The IPCC got it for being the best representative of the people who did the science. But discovering that there is a problem doesn't do much good without the political will to solve it. If solving a problem is not in the interest of the influential pressure groups, you need to build popular support. The Nobel prize committee judged Gore is a good representative of the people who have done that, because his film is the single thing that has made the greatest difference. If you don't restrict yourself to judging the influence of single factors, the combined work of millions of activists probably did more than the one film, but it is a bit difficult to give a prize to millions of people. So you pick one to represent them. Gore was the lucky guy.

Bush is in a position to be more effective than Gore, so he could easily have won the prize if he had tried. In fact, a principled policy based on Christian principles of charity and unselfishness, applied to foreign policy, third world development and environmental policy, should have pretty much guaranteed Bush the prize. But Bush is more an Old Testament kinda guy.

Just as they judged that Mahatma Gandhi was unsuitable for the Peace Prize, and on several occasions. Their wisdom is inscrutable. :?

Gore did more than make a movie. He has long been pushing this issue - he was mocked as "Ozone Man" by George (Herbert) Bush decades ago (Bush apparently couldn't tell the difference between the greenhouse effect and the thinning of the ozone).

Nobel Peace prizes have been given to politicians, organizations (Red Cross, Amnesty International, Quaker's AFSC, etc) religious leaders (Dali Lama, Mother Theresa, Martin Luther King, etc) and scientists (Linus Pauling) that have worked on peace related issues .

Linus Pauling did not invent the idea that fall-out from above-ground testing of nuclear weapons was bad. But he focused attention on the problem, got people thinking about it, and he was an agent of change that improved the whole world. Same with Gore. He didn't do the basic science (the IPCC did much of it) ... but Gore did more than anyone to make people aware that this is an issue that will profoundly affect us in the next decades, and that we might want to do something about it.

From my far leftist perspective (i.e., not exactly unbiased), the Nobel Prize committee is made of a number of people who enjoy sticking it in the face of the rabid right. They did it once again in awarding former Vice-President Al Gore. I cannot think of a better use of Nobel Prize resources.

Global warming is a complete crock so the award for the person who coined the phrase should have been a cracked pot.
