Thank you! Since we're pointing out who enslaved who, let's not forget the early, White, American settlers had white, endentured, slaves. They were bought and sold on the auction block just like African slaves. Eventually, Whites did away with that when African slaves came along because they didn't want Africans to think they could buy their way out like Whites and didn't want Africans to think they were equal to White slaves.

For years, the only difference between the White slave and African slave is that Whites could buy their way out and that wasn't always an option for Africans.

My main question here is, slaves make basically no money, pocket change at best. How could a slave buy their way out of slavery?
Also, I thought Native Americans were the slaves in america before blacks came along?

Hell they were rare, but free blacks even owned black slaves in the US also. My ancestors fought the War of Independence to fight being slaves of other white people. Hell that is why the initially came to america (though I find it hypocritical how they did the Natives here, then the blacks). Whites actually bought black slaves off black slave owners in Africa though.

White slaves in some Muslim countries were allowed to own businesses and make money to purchase their freedom. It has been called "enlightened slavery", one of the most horrible oxymorons ever created.

Snake, you've heard of indentured servitude, right? Indentured servitude and the caste system survived in England for hundreds and hundreds of years. The British brought that system over to the colonies. Your work itself earned you your freedom. That's how you bought it. And, African slaves did the same thing except it was harder and few slave owners gave them that opportunity. Many of the great, African-American Abolitionist who fled north were slaves who bought their freedom from their masters. But, that freedom only came if the slave owner allowed it. White servants were the ones who pushed to ban it for Whites because they found themselves competing with African who were actually better at many of the jobs. So, laws started to be passed that said Africans didn't have the same rights as Whites.

Indians were never enslaved at the rate of African Americnas or any other. There is no comparison. Indians had their own nations (tribes) within America, therefore had their own protection. There were indeed some Indian slaves, but what White people found is that they needed their knowledge of the land to prosper.

I've never heard of African Americans owning African Americans. Can you provide a reference for me to read up on that? That reading would be very interesting to me because what I do know as a fact is that former slaves were not allowed to own property. It was against the law. Slaves were considered property, therefore, that would have been against the law for an African American to own another African American. With the Emancipation Proclamation things slowly started to change, but many states/counties still wouldn't honor a former slave owning property. It was in the 20th Century that those laws were challenged, allowing Blacks to legally own property, but that was after the abolishment of slavery. I do know Whites bought African slaves from African kingdoms. Everyone knows that. African slaves were the bounty of waring tribes...same as in Egypt, Rome and many other societies. If a tribe had no use for them, they'd be sold. They sold them for profit. That's the way slavery has worked throughout history and America was no different.

At the end of the day I think it's important to know that Whites in America enslaved their own as well. This went on for several generations.

Here's a summary of White Indentured Slavery in the Colonies

http://www.pbs.org/opb/historydetective ... ature.html

If you ever have the chance to watch "A History Of Slavery In America," do so. It gets into all of this in detail and shows documents from the early Americas proving it all.

One of my ancestors came from debtors' prison in England to the Virginia colony as a bondservant. While working off the debt, he married and started a family. When the debt was worked off there were 14 members of the family, including a baby grandchild, to pass through the Cumberland Gap to Kentucky. They also had a milk cow for the baby.

It's shameful, but slavery in one form or another is allowed in any culture that allows enough capital to concentrate in one spot that corrupt officials can be paid to look the other way. This still includes the U.S. with the underground sweat shops, semi-"illegal" immigrants, mob-run prostitution and protection rackets, and employer-union alliances that keep employees broke and dependent on them for survival.

It happens all the over the world. Others just turn a blind eye and point towards our shores. I bet that of all the countries on this earth, more than half have economies that depend on it.

I just remember my high school history teacher, when she taught black history she said that there were some free black Americans who bought black slaves. It wouldn't surprise me honestly. Because most of my peers in my neighborhood are black, and some of them have said that too.
I dunno, I suppose I can look something up.

Well, I hate to say she taught you wrong, but... African-Americans could not own property of any kind. And, when you think about what slavery represented, it's doubtful they ever would. With Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation, some states were slated to give former slaves forty acres and a mule to begin their lives again during Reconstruction. That whole idea failed miserably.

However, after the Civil War, African-Americans did start buying land whenever a White landowner was willing to sell it. There's documentation in southern courthouses of this happening all over the place. However, buying and receiving are two different things. Sometimes, illiterate, former slaves only got the land on paper, but never physical occupancy.

Any African-American who told you that slaves owned slaves ought to be ashamed of themselves. Slaves barely had the right to breathe. How on earth were they going to dominate another human being?

Hmm? :?

African tribes did raid each other and take slaves. Read "Things Fall Apart".

Slaves didn't own slaves, but free blacks sometimes did. In fact, there were some black slave owners who fought for the confederacy during the war.

I know there were a very very few free black men in the US during slavery. They were rare, but they did exist...
I remember also an episode of A Different World being on where the little light skin woman with the high pitch voice, she had found out that her forefather somewhere down the line owned other blacks during slavery. She was very ashamed of this and afraid to tell her peers. I know it's just television, but why would they lie about something that big in black history on a show mainly targeted for black people?

Exactly.... Another thing to note though, on a side note here, is the confederates did a lot more to help native americans than the union did... The union did more to help blacks. But ultimately the decision to free black slaves was more for political gain at the time than them having learned why it was wrong in the first place. So both sides were very racist there. But Union soldiers were still burning down Native American settlements after the civil war was done. And I could swear there was a famous Native American confederate general, I can't think of his name right now though. As far as the civil war went, I have heavy disagreements with both sides of it. But all that was a side note.

History is not as clear-cut as you are presenting it. Someone once said that history is the best story we can tell today with the little information we have that's available. When it comes to the story of slavery, the specific story is much more varied than the generalized story we usually learn.

Slavery, above all, was an economic institution. If it wasn't profitable, it wouldn't have survived in the United States. And yes, African-Americans did own slaves because it was profitable. A black man named Anthony Johnson, who had come to Jamestown, Virginia in 1621 as a servant himself, by the 1650s owned slaves. See David A. Price, Love and Hate in Jamestown, p. 198. This in not the only instance, either. When it comes to the question of African-Americans legally owning property, that depended on the law. Remember that in the lead up to the American Civil War, one of the fightin' points was States' Rights. That partly meant that States had the right to write their own laws and the Federal Government couldn't butt in. Laws throughout the States were not consistent and changed fairly dramatically through time. Property ownership for blacks varied from state to state. Yes, they could own property in various places and time periods, and that could include both land and slaves.

Really interesting fact: Slavery was not legally abolished in New York State until . . . guess when? . . . 1827. The history of slavery in the North was longer than we Northerners want to hear about. It's more comfortable to point the finger South.

Why hate arabs? There are --some-- arabs that are bad, but I prefer to take everyone on an individual basis myself...... I mean ok, 9/11 was bad, but that wasn't every arab that ever lived, you can't just judge an entire race of people based on --some-- of their actions.... My good friend fahad who works at the mini mart/gas station up the road, I've got loads of respect for that man. He came here and worked his ass off every day doing what he enjoys, he's nice to everyone and he has a great since of humor. He's not the least bit violent.

Er, are you in Europe Aridarr? I could see what would make you say that if you lived in Europe actually.... I hear PCness has gone insane, especially in the nordic kingdoms, we're you risk being locked up for a hate crime if you report a minority for a crime against you. From what I understand arabs are the number one minority over there. Even still, I know it's difficult in that situation and I could understand what would make you feel suspicious around them given that situation, but I still don't think ever single arab is bad.... During slavery here in the US there were a few good white people who helped blacks lay low , did not own slaves, in the underground railroad movement. So I'm sure not all arabs are bad.

I was actually speaking from a feminist perspective; but I agree with what you are saying in principle. People should be judged as individuals. I suppose my gripe is with the society in their countries in general.

That and a good portion of heavy leftie PC whites are conditioned to be ashamed of being white, or male, in schools that paint a 1 sided picture throughout history... The school system paints a picture where whites are always guilty of oppressing other races, and never shows the parts where we were actually oppressed by other races. The white man is always painted with horns and a tail in our history books.
Sure, they've done some bad, evil things. But all races have, evil is not exclusively white or male. It's not exclusively any color or any gender, or any nationality. Or any party.

As someone else posted on another forum i read:

"This is most obnoxious part about being white. But its important to understand that this “expertise” is based on white peoples own self-hatred.

White people are so ignorant of history they actually believe that they’re the only people in history ever to have “oppressed” other people. They are also totally convinced that no people have ever “oppressed” white people.

The invasions and untold slaughters into Europe by the Mongols, Moors, Arabs, Turks, Huns, and other assorted Asian or North African peoples is one big blank of history. Even more comical is the idea that places like “the New World” were like great big Grateful Dead concerts before Europeans arrived. Never mind the Aztecs wiping out the Incas or sacrificing over 20,000 babies so the sun would rise in the morning, white people don’t want to hear it.

Don’t tell a white person that the Arab slave trade consumed 10 times more black Africans compared to their own slave trade as the white will explain that the Arabs treated their slaves much better. And NEVER bring up the fact to a white person that the Muslims also enslaved an untold number of white slaves out of Europe during the “Dark Ages.”

This is a form of White supremacism that is very misunderstood. Its basically telling the world “well, we expect you to slaughter, invade, colonize people but we’re white, so its very bad if we do it and not so much if you do.” Its basically telling the world that their a bunch of animals, who of course act like animals but only whites should be held accountable because they’re white (Read: Human).

The reason whites become “experts” in other cultures is to suppress the hate they feel towards their own feelings of superiority. It sounds confusing but its kind of like letting your little niece win in checkers to make her feel good and afterwords feeling bad about it. A white person must never show any positive feelings towards anything accomplished by a white person but must always point out that when a non-white accomplishes something that they were the “first” fill-in-the-blank to do so. At the same time, if a white person accomplishes something its for “humanity” or for “mankind.” To you non-whites reading this, I know this must sound confusing as hell but we’re a very strange people.
