Reality is they are all dying and the red/blue state map pretty much shows dying states versus thriving states.

Libs don't seem to want to understand that it's not the sheer amount of money you pour into programs that causes improvement; rather, it's how efficiently the money is used. It is possible to approach infinite funds and still fail, if you let people's natural greed and tendency toward waste get in the way. The government's speciality is doing a little with a lot. But Conservatism, by it's very definition, means doing a lot with a little, and toward that end, keeping government only as big as it needs to be. Which of those two opposing action philosophies sounds like the best plan?

Of course, in Liberalism, you do get to whine more -- because everything bad that happens to you is allowed to be weeped and wailed as being someone else's fault. Conservatism, on the other hand, teaches personal responsibility. In fact, personal responsibility is exactly what Conservativism is.

Human institutions will never operate with 100% efficiency so I don't think it's a valid argument against government programs. The best we can do is try to eliminate egregious examples of waste and make sure no one is skimming off the top.

You're incredibly misinformed to the point of talking out of your ass. Not only did Ohio go for Bush in 2004, we had a Republican governor, two Republican senators, the ohio house of representatives and senate were and still are a republican majority, not to mention republicans run local politics in Cincinnati and and pretty much everywhere else outside of Cleveland and Columbus. I eagerly await your explanation of how democrats have ruined ohio despite the best intentions of the republican majority.

Oh, and the economy isn't that bad either, though obviously we were hurt by manufacturing jobs moving overseas.

you can call them whatever you want

Particularly in his first years in the Senate, Voinovich was opposed to lowering tax rates. He frequently joined Democrats on tax issues and in 2000 was the only Republican in Congress to vote against a bill providing for relief from the "marriage penalty." While he did vote for the tax bills of 2001 and 2003 and has voted in favor of eliminating the estate tax, Voinovich is still more hesitant to support cutting taxes than most in his party

I know a democrat when i see one, just because Ohio has two divisions of the democrat party with one division calling themselves republicans, don't make them republicans.

Oh, okay then. I won't bother arguing with you. Also, the proper name of the party is the Democratic Party, not the Democrat Party.

I can't speak for the whole state but there are plenty of jobs in the area I live in, business are thriving.

Whatever. I'm on my way to med school. Federal grants and work study are the only reasons I'm able to get by on just the government subsidized student loan, for now, and still have enough food in my belly to concentrate on my studies. I would have had to go into the blue collar if it hadn't been for the government's help. My parents just didn't have enough money to put me through med school themselves.

My room-mate would be on the streets right now without his disability check. He admits that it's a flawed system, though, because he ended up slouching about longer than he had to before actually motivating himself to go out seeking work. It's a big regret in his life. Still, it's what kept him from starving or going without medical intervention during the period of his life during which he was unable to walk. Before he busted up his back, though, he was making a decent income. He owned his own house, and he drove a nice car. He earned all that, but hard times put him down. Right now, he's on his way to reestablishing himself in the workforce, and he and his fiance have a baby on the way. Once he's landed a decent job, he's going to be able to support himself again. For the next few months, though, the rest of his disability is going to be the only thing that keeps him in decent shelter.

Section 8 allows low-income families to provide decent shelter for their children. Again, not a perfect system, but it keeps the cockroaches off of a few children's faces. If you've never seen a slum, you don't want to. They're nasty. Just walking by them puts me in dry heaves. If a woman is expecting a baby, she can avoid being forced to choose between abortion and poor living conditions for her child by signing up for this program. The current waiting period is two years. If the conservatives had their way, 1) the woman would be forced to have the child, whether or not she has the means to rear it, and 2) the child would celebrate his second birthday in a slum.

You can call me all the names you want, but I'm not going to be budged on this issue.
so what you are saying is nobody would help anyone out unless forced to by the government.
I've seen people helped by the programs that I specified.

To be fair, employment did suffer greatly due to technological advancement in the factories. Remaining jobs require far more extensive education. However, this is one of the costs of progress.

That doesn't seem to be the case as unemployment fell after nafta.
http://cafehayek.typepad.com/hayek/2008 ... -wall.html
Not only that, but really, even looking at the changes that have occurred, nafta doesn't seem to be the problem. Sure the sources may be somewhat biased, however, does that mean that they are wrong? After all, it is almost universally accepted economic logic that trade is more efficient than less trade.

.... oh, I see you addressed the point brought in by the second link.

Actually, I think it is. Perhaps not ideal, but one of the arguments against government programs does end up being innovation and entrepreneurship vs government funded monopolies. The argument that innovation and information seeking behaviors caused by competition are necessary and the driving forces in a capitalist economy has existed for many years, and some would even argue that the lack of competition and the fruits of said competition is the reason why the Soviet Union fell.(their problems resulted in economic malaise)

And, by the way, I think that Upstate New York tends to be more conservative.

If I recall correctly.

Furthermore, George Pataki was their governor until just las year.

But what kind of jobs are those people now working? It could be that unemployment has fallen overall but that the average job pays less than the old factory jobs did.

I'm afraid I just don't see the tangible benefits of free trade policies. It could be that I'm paying less for an iPod or whatever, but honestly I'd rather just pay more for it and keep the jobs here.

I remember hearing the argument that it's only sh***y jobs that move overseas, which I don't think is the case. There are plenty of americans willing to work in call centers, doing tech support, doing programming work, and working in factories.

The market doesn't necessarily provide for the public good and thus that's left to the government.

I guess ideally the midpoint between our two positions would be to have private entities bid for government contracts to fulfill those functions, but after the kind of graft, waste, and outright corruption we've seen in Iraq contracts I'm not sure that solution is any better than just letting the government handle it all.

Can you prove it's untrue ?

I know I'm abrasive, I'm sure something more aggresive came to your mind, good self control. I don't care anymore who I offend, I'm tired of listening to the whining and know the reality of the situation that there is no shortage of guys looking for somebody to settle down with, but not many are willing to settle down with a witch who makes no attempt at all to attract a guy.

i had a welfare queen neighbor, the woman had 4 kids, i would have stepped in if she wasn't such a whining slug, she was normal looking so it wasn't her looks, it was her sniviling about the world and being a slug, another one with two kids nobody would go near, wasn't her looks either. Now add 200 extra pounds on and being mean and or a slug and nobody is going to go near them because they have no backbone.

the one with 4 kids went to college and married a bum. Government bent over backwards for her, she had a section 8 rental house in a decent subdivision and wouldn't clean it or wash her kids & their cloths, had no job. Her sister has all her kids now plus 2 of her own. So who ended up taking care of the kids, not the government, her family.

My current house I bought from two slugs, place was let go to hell, they where in their 40's nothing wrong with them and no kids, just slugs who let the place go to hell. Just a small place so it wasn't like they had some huge mortgage to pay, they bought it years ago before the run up in housing prices. Just two drunken bums.

People would have no problem at all funding education for somebody willing to apply themselves, but they also know like 1/2 the kids in college are just there attending a big keg party and will never graduate and many that do will do nothing with their so called education.

You can't prove a negative. The best I can say is that you made an absolute statement to which I've seen contrary examples.

Most guys I've known wouldn't even consider dating a woman who had kids already. If I wasn't already married I'd be one of them at this point since I can't stand kids.

As for being abrasive, it's a communal messageboard. Moderating your words is part of being a community member.

mounting evidence shows the planet is getting warmer, believe what you want, I'm sure there is a study to back it up either way.
I did my own study, used to stop at a place over weight people shouldn't be eating at and didn't see them treat themselves to a little grease, I saw them pig out at Dino's fry pit, if it ain't deep fried it ain't on the menu type place, a salad, yeah right not there.
Normal people would get a tray of food for a family of 4 and here comes 400 pound walking dead person with a loaded tray just for themselves, it was in their gene's to order it all and than eat it all.

using the same logic I'm sure you will be happy to hand every panhandler $100 or more because it will really help some of them out, while the rest will waste it and be back for more the next day. When you relise over 90% of your giving to people or the government is wasted and taken advantage of, you won't be so gun-ho to think it's just wonderful.

I used to drive a truck, met bums all over the country, it sure sucked telling people no can't help them out because some of the people I turned down where really decent people who just needed some gas or some help and would never wind up in the same situation again, problem was for everyone of them there was another 100 scam artists working the system. The guy with the motorcycle helmet walking around asking for $2.00 for gas because he lost his wallet, most people would think nothing of helping the guy out, could see themselves in his shoes, he was west of sacramento down on his luck one day and the next day pulling the same scam south of sacramento. I would be broke if I gave money to everyone who asked and had a story.

when you get older you will relise the government is the worst way in the world to help people out because of all the people who make a lifestyle out of being down on their luck and it's better if friends and family do it so people know who not to even bother with.

If the government didn't have a system of student loans, bankers would and families would do whatever they had to do to get one of their kin into medical school, grandpa would remortgage his house, uncle Bob would help, local church would have money available, so the government isn't the only way DECENT people can get help. Some of my unions dues went to help members kids go to college, belonged to another truck driver organization who helped members kids with school money.
