Should the U.S. peacefully annex Mexico?
don't forget splitting up texas.
or even better, just pave over west texas....horrid wastelands.
That's the shortest route, for sure.
But whether it'll work still remains to be seen -- and it doesn't look promising.
edit: i voted happy belated cinco de mayo.
hehe

I don't think it's a bad idea in principle (ideally I'd like a global federal republic), but it's not likely to happen. Racists, paleoconservative WASP ethnocentrists, and fundamentalist protestants here would oppose such an annexation vigorously and Mexicans will reject it as "Gringo Imperialism." A union with Canada is far more likely.
Plenty arent.
The "risking their lives" part of it probably intimidates many.
Also, what you speak of is effectively colonialism and empire building, and after the fuss you kicked up about OUR empires, it would be the height of bad taste to start your own.
Well, getting past the labels "colonialism" and "empire building",
I think the reality on the ground could work as a mutually agreeable solution for both countries.
And maybe I've heard so many people on WP telling me how my country powermongers all over the world,
that I guess I just finally got revved up into this latest idea by the power of suggestion!
I mean, hey, if we're the born tyrants that WP seems to think we are,
then we might as well start planning some constructive "tyranny"!
Also, I've just married a Hispanic girl, so maybe I'm biased toward wanted Mexican-American unity.

Riddle me this... the US has issue with the influx of cheap labour provided by illegal immigrants who have to actually put effort in to heading north. How stressed will the labour market be when the whole population of mexico can legally wander into the U.S and find a job?
It sure as hell isnt helping the UK any, after the EU effectively removed all the borders in europe.

I really don't know, to be honest. That's why I made the thread, so that people can brainstorm a bit.

I have a query.. what is the mass exodus doing to Mexico? In europe, certain cities have fallen in size by measureable amount, and trying to find a plumber in poland is like searching for rocking horse s**t. Is there a similar skills hole opening up in mexico?

That's the shortest route, for sure.
But whether it'll work still remains to be seen -- and it doesn't look promising.
it hasn't even been tried. they're building a wall instead and getting the people all up in arms about the immigrants when the immigrants aren't the problem so much as the government they're escaping. and maybe just lock up the criminals who come here rather than shipping them back.

Which would surely cause an overcrowding issue in the prison system? How do you know that the government isnt leaning on mexico diplomatically speaking? Also, a solid wall sounds like a damn good idea. It worked in Berlin.
The UK is an island, surrounded by sea (as islands usually are) and we cant keep the buggers out. A huge contiguous land border must be a nightmare.

I like the common argument that we can't afford to make a wall.
That one's just rich, no pun intended.

you most likely keep different circles from me but it isn't that we can't afford the wall but rather that it's cost inefficient and will not fix the problem and will only, at most, temporarily alleviate the immediate symptom of the mass of illegal immigration.
it's (barely) masking a problem rather than fixing it.
Getting past the "how-dare-you"s, do you think the end net result of the U.S. adding Mexico as a state
would be more positive for all concerned than the current climate of rampant illegal immigration
from the hunger- and poverty-stricken third-world country of Mexico, or more negative?
Advantages:
1. It would solve the illegal immigration problem once and for all.
2. It would automatically make all Mexicans United States citizens -- both those who risk their lives
to get here and those who can only dream of being here.
3. Once it's governed by our laws, Mexico's economy would skyrocket from its present sorry state
to equal that of the leader of the free world.
4. Many other countries wish America would make them this same deal, but Mexico is lucky enough
to be already contigious with our mainland, and therefore adding them as a state would be relatively easy
and natural. (Makes more sense than our courting Puerto Rico.)
Disadvantages:
1. Culture shock.
2. Whites would be made an extreme minority, but blunting that disadvantage would be
the fact that there would be much more intermariage between hispanics and whites, which would
effectively create a new racial breed and status.
Thoughts?
If whites and latino's intermarry, as they have done for the last 500 years than we will somply have MORE Mestizos!
If the US "annexes" Mexico, within a few decades American Culture and Mexican/Latino culture will be SYNONYMOUS. What this means is that the US will become effectively an extension of Mexico rather than vice versa.
That's the shortest route, for sure.

How does a wall between the U.S. and Mexico not stop people from crossing the border?
