While I was raised Lutheran I have recently begun to simply define myself as "Christian" without any denomination attached. In the rare occasion I go to church, I often find myself quietly disagreeing with the pastor. The largest was during the children's sermon one day when he said that God will protect you from harm if you believe. I disagree with this statement. God does not protect his followers physical form, if he did that would defeat the purpose of this life (which is to teach us pain and evil so we can truly experience good). I also disagree with the selection committee's recommendation of him as our pastor in the first place, since one member of the selection committee was extremely homophobic and blocked any candidate who even had a neutral opinion of homosexuality.
The list goes on and on. The bottom line is that I take the words of Jesus seriously but consider the old testament to be little more then a historical account of Israel's understanding of God, and much of the post-gospel new testament be a theological discussion where my personal opinion has just as much weight.
I dislike the idea of trying to scare people into living a righteous life. People should live a righteous life because that's simply what being a Christian is all about, not for fear of the fires of Hell. In the end many people who claim to be Christian really are not, for I know no true Christian who would even consider condemning another human being.
