P.T.Barnum had the right idea.

It would not surprise me in the least if the mind continues to exist after the body is destroyed

what leads you to believe that?

Also, I consider mind-body physicalism to be possible iff strong AI is possible.

I don't consider strong AI to be possible.

Therefore, I don't consider mind-body physicalism to be possible.

The physical nervous matter in our heads explains syntactic processing, but does not explain consciousness even slightly.

studies like that will probably start to illuminate the matter better.

I've seen it

I keep up with these items you know

Again: explains syntactic function of brain; does not explain semantic function of brain

like i said...start to. decoding the genome will most likely look like child's play compared to decoding the mind rather less the conscious mind.

I can virtually guarantee that's never going to happen

All we will be able to do is show how the brain is a somewhat more complex variation on this

You can't say that for sure, can you? I'd prefer the Rapture over another nuclear holocaust.

Of course not

That's why I said virtually guarantee

On the other side of the coin, I can virtually guarantee that the Second Coming of Christ is not imminent and indeed will not happen. I suppose it might happen, but intuition leads me to believe otherwise.

See above.

And of course, if a 9.8 magnitude war ever happens (i.e., we all die), it will be our own fault as a species.

The second I'd recover from flash-blindedness to look around at the waste around me, I wouldn't be dismayed but relieved.

I'll hazard a guess: never.

Well, as skafather84 said, we don't know yet, but I can say the odds seems to be a fair amount against it, for the moment, I suppose this could lead to the impossibility of AI with conscience and self-awarness.

Science cannot explain conscoiusness, what it is or where it comes from. This is skirting very close to religious and philosophical territory. Can anyone tell me the difference between a living person and a corpse? Some things should humble you, scientists.

Not really. My view is actually pretty detached, and I would really rather believe that thoughts can be modeled with purely physical components.

Also, I consider mind-body physicalism to be possible iff strong AI is possible.

well, I can't say for sure, but it seems that the mind is dependent on the body, perhaps one complement of the other, biological speaking though, at least from what we gather from it.

Although if strong AI was possible, and a duplication of one's mind could be made, in that sense, it could be some sort of mind without the body, however it would be just a copy.

It seems that Kurzweil believe with some certainty that transfering your mind to a machine will be possible, he is even taking medicine to stay alive for 20 more years, so he can do that with himself.

I find this type of cheating death and perhaps inmortality to be appealing, but, I agree that this look too much to actually think of it as practical and real, too good to be true, you could say :P. But, for the time, it is just a conjecture I suppose.
