How did you make the leap from 'science' (rigorous hypothesis testing) to 'material things'?

Who 'worships' science?

If, hypothetically, I set up an altar to my new god, the Two-Sided Significance Test, would that make me a Satanist?

Yes, Christianity is a religion. It's a monotheistic faith heavily influenced by paganism.

You need to get out into the real world more. The most common form of Satanism in the USA is LaVey-ist Satanism, which is atheist. For them, "Satan" is a symbol of the unbridled self. Their "worship" rituals are done mostly as an amusement. The self-identified Satanists of my acquaintance were all atheists. So far as they were concerned, there was no God and no actual being named "Satan". Satan was just a convenient symbol for them.

Christianity is just another kind of business and government. It was built upon Pagan religions in order to unite people in one strong community and then spread all over the world, but its aim remained the same - to keep people under control.
