Fringe lunatics tend to interpret the Bible literally (even though almost everything Jesus taught was in parable form), which include the Great Commission. If you look at it in historical context, Judaism was just as much an ethnic group as a religion... it's only in the last 40 years or so, or up to about 80 in the US, that Judaism was considered a religion rather than an ethnic group. Making "disciples of all nations" means that Christianity was meant to be pan-ethnic ("There is no longer Jew and Greek, nor slave and free, nor male and female, but all are one in Jesus Christ"). Before Christianity, the only other time religion spread across ethnic lines were when one nation conquered another...

As for my personal experiences, I don't know any witnesses. Overall I don't remember ever getting a front door solicitation either. There's a whole part of my family that follows the Mormon faith, but we still get along very well... Actually, within my extended family (at least those parts that are in regular contact), there is the aforementioned mormons, some jews, some roman catholics, methodists, and presbyterians (of which I am a member)... In addition the family is pretty much evenly scattered across the political spectrum as well, but still we get along well together...

Probably because only fringe lunatics have the arrogant sense of certainty to spread their religion like it was a product.

Bingo!

I don't think it's arrogance. Heck, I'm arrogant and proud to be so, but I don't want to go door to door. It's really the policy of the leadership of their groups which command how they witness.

Leadership policy = arrogance = door2door witnessing

Whose arrogance though, if so? The leaders' or the peons'?

What do you do to get visited by JWs and Mormons so often? I'd love to meet one of them with a well enough understanding of German (alternatively English) to really discuss the things. I think if nothing else it would broaden my horizon.

They won't leave you alone till you go to their church. Would you want your horizons broadened against your will? If I were you, I'd just pretend not to understand English when the Jo-Ho's or Mormons come to your door.

One time I saw a Middle Eastern Mormon.

I don't know, you have to be pretty arrogant and self-assured to think your particular point of view is so compelling that it could be sold in the same way as chocolates or calenders.

Next time they come to your door, tell them that you'd LOVE to hear about their beliefs but unfortunately you are a satanist and have already sold your soul to the devil.

That's funny, but I've spent my life arguing that not being a Christian does not make me a Satan worshipper. That epithet has been thrown at me too many times to count.

I firmly believe in the one true commandment, as told by George Carlin:

"Keep thy religion to thyself!"

If I don't tell you about my religion or ask you about yours, what makes you think I want you to babble on about it?

For what it is worth, I got the impression they were Mormons, since it was two dudes together dressed in black slacks, white buttoned-down collard shirts, and black ties. As I dismissed them I tried to read their name tags, but couldn’t tell for sure what organization it stated.

My cars have stickers on them declaring no preaching is allowed in my presence. This should be respected. I could care less how anybody else chooses to live their life, so long as it does not affect how I choose to live mine. Unfortunately, organized religions feel they have the right to dictate to everyone else how to live their lives. I find this to be the most disrespectful thing you can do to a person’s sense of self.

Oh no, don't do that! Mentioning your committment to the Devil, reaL or fake, would trigger a veritable sh*tstorm of Bible-flapping and chin-wagging. You might actually have to let them move into your house just to shut them up.

It's actually been thrown at me, an open follower of the Christian faith, merely because I don't take a literalist viewpoint on the Bible...

Aside from being at church, or here on the PPR forum, which I consider fair ground (since "religion" is in the name), I usually don't talk about my faith unless someone else brings it up.

Usually I only tend to get preachy when other people get preachy. Usually the people that make me preachy are other christians.

The same two bastards came by my house tonight at 1940. We had just put the baby down and were tucking in the other two when the doorbell rang. My wife and I both were like, "Who the hell could that be? I'm not answering the door at this hour!" So we continued with our parental duties and hear the storm door open and then a knock on the front door. So my wife asks me if I had an altercation with someone on the way home from work, since I have been known to have meltdowns when people attack me for just going about my business. I said, "Not that I am aware of!" Many times I have no clue who the person is and why they are confronting me. So she goes to look out the window and sees two young guys in white collared shirts, black slacks, and ties standing behind my car, bending over to read my bumper stickers. Then she said one of them looked back at the house just before reaching down to my bumper as if he was going to try and remove some of my bumper stickers. So I rushed down stairs and opened the door in a way that would get my point across. They both stand back up and start walking out of my driveway. I said, "Do I need to call the cops to have you arrested for vandalizing my car and trespassing?" They started to jabber, but I just slammed the door at 'em.
