Have you ever considered becoming a wanderer?
Well it's obvious we're sinking into a depression, gas stations running out of gas, banks collapsing, the whole bail out all over the news, food becoming too expensive, people loosing their jobs..... If you can't see the writing on the wall your closing your eyes and living in a day dream.....
I am a spiritual wanderer by nature, tied down to my current home via family and what not.... Honestly I want to break free though..... At the same time I can't abandon my family. We're already struggling as it is.. There have been quite a few times I've roved.
Wanderers as you put it are full of wisdom and real, true, life experience.... In the west especially, trained to "respect success", people ignore the man in rags who speaks pure wisdom, forever following media-made messiahs and prophets of profit who travel in leer jets and limozines.... materialism, another drug of the common masses.
The wealthy people may have paper money, they may have tons of toys and meterial objects, but often their still not really happy... They put on this mask though as if they are..... They do not have a clear understanding of the deeper nature of the world around them. Business is a dog-eat-dog psychopathic world where the dirtier man wins.
The poor and the nomadic may not have those pretty little toys and a pocket full of dead presidents on paper, but are richer in life experience, knowledge, and wisdom... Things that are scoffed at today. He works for himself, and not for someone else. Does what he wants, not what someone else wants him to do. He doesn't live for material gains, but for life's lessons. Rejected by society, he stands alone, claiming no emotional investment in other people's opinions. He is free, and self-sufficient.

We could be headed into a depression - in terms of the amount of suspect debt that is chained to bad debt which is chained to collapsed debt, things don't look too solid. Whether or not it is a deep recession, depression, or moderate recession, I have no idea.
The gas shortages are localized and due to factors that can be classed as temporary disruptions (hurricanes causing refineries in Texas to shut down a few weeks, etc).
For the time being, the rest of the world needs us, economically. They won't let us go to pieces, because they can't afford it. We buy (and, believe it or not, still export) a lot.
Nevertheless, I'm kind of anxious about staying here.

pezar, that's an interesting idea. I've considered the very same thing! There was a time I had a burning passion for solar collectors, and built a miniature one myself. The stirling engine I attempted to build was an utter failure, however the idea of complete self sufficiency ( in regards to energy/food/water/shelter) has appealed to me so much lately that I've just recently purchased Henry David Thoreau's Walden Pond. Twas an early inspiration as a sophomore in high school, figured I'd go back, and see how another's tried it. Was somewhat disappointed in learning he did his 2 year, 2 month "experiment" on his "mentor's" land (Ralph Waldo Emerson), however, the idea of complete solitude is what I initially was enamored with. Perhaps I should've looked for Hatchet instead...
ouinon, I thoroughly enjoyed reading your account on living life on the road.
Were I to "wander," I'd probably rather not bother with "begging" (though I do not look down on this), but favor fishing/gathering. Fishing I've done, and enjoy, hunting never done, probably would not enjoy, but gathering, what would I be gathering? Cans and bottles! To redeam for cash, and to purchase whatever I might need at the moment! Brilliant self sufficiency (if I may say so myself!), at the expense of wasteful habits of others-gotta love it! I think wandering the city streets as an "outsider," as I feel now, and have always felt, would lift my spirit. Being "tied down," isn't comfortable. Being at the mercy of others, and at their beck and call, and adhering to constant demands and restrictions, and "following" a plan that has no end, really is wearing on the soul lately, and has for the better part of these past 4 years...
Am I a city slicker? Of course. Am I an ignorant, romanticizing the idea of being homeless in a way to "escape"? Nope. Have already lived the life on the "outside." What was unfortunate for me was the fact that I was at the mercy of my parents as a child, and being weak and dumb, could not, and would not ever go it alone. I simply wish to return to the way I'm meant to be.
