That makes sense. But I have to say, many aspects of Calvinist Protestantism are somewhat misanthropic.
What calvinists dislike about people is that they're physical beings with physical urges-notably sexual impulses. But misanthropy without a doubt is TOTALLY contrary to the creed of Catholicism.

Yes, but only if you're a lousy Christian.

Or a good misanthrope!

That would be a sociopathic misanthrope ;)
Really, having a position of power when you can manipulate the masses, then, yes, a christian can be that, a good way to get advantage of people's needs and hopes.

Yeah, just like any non-Christian in power. Lenin, Mao, Pol Pot, anyone?

I tend to find 'happy clappy' christians a bit creepy.

This is satan's world, why wouldn't one be a misanthrope?

As for it being calvinist, and innately non-catholic, why do you think hermits exist? why do they go off and live in the desert or in a forest?

I think it's usually referred to as Christian Pessimism and it's not restricted to any one faith.

I'd say its very possible for a person with Christian upbringing and values to feel jaded enough by the world around them to start wondering if they are; usually they see that as a problem to resolve though rather than an end destination (unless they have some sort of mental illness that they aren't addressing).

I disagree, you can like God but like people a lot less. It isn't ideal Christianity, but it is possible, and I think a Christian misanthrope would try to help people if put in a responsible position, it is just that such a person would find it hard to enjoy such a thing and prefer to stick to work that is more abstract, and to a faith that is more theo-centric, like Calvinism, as some people have already mentioned.

Calvinist misanthrope here, to confirm the suspicions of all of you claiming that Calvinists hate everyone.

Really though, my dislike of people in general isn't based on my faith, and I recognize that in many ways it runs counter to the Christian faith. But, needless to say, I'm not a perfect Christian, and arguably not even a halfway-decent one.

So yes, it is possible to be both a Christian and a misanthrope (even if this does imply a certain level of internal contradiction in worldview) for the simple reason that no Christian is able to fully live up to the ideal.

Jesus' Sermon on the Mount? Love thy neighbour as you love yourself? If you love God but hate your fellow man, you're a hypocrite.
