It's already a problem. There's not enough arable land to grow the food we need. I don't see that being less of a problem as the population increases.

So you say we should have more really big wars? Again I'm not arguing that it wouldn't solve the problem its just not a very safe or efficient way to do it.

On average the birthrate is exponential. Just because this group of 4 couples have 1 child each and that group of 4 have 4 doesn't make the end result of double the total population any less real.

But more to the point.. how exactly do you enforce a limited birthrate? Only some may breed? And how do you determine who may breed exactly? By what criteria? Do you go for the Chinese option? Because that really works... dead girl babies in the street and generations of nothing but boys causing problems?

It rings of eugenics to me, and faulty science, and faulty statistics.

Hence why voluntarily choosing not to breed is the best solution though the least viable. How you would go about making an enforced population control system work out without major problems though I don't know.

Mandatory sterilization after your second child is one option. I think the Chinese problem was just cultural and unique to the region and it didn't last long enough to sort itself out. Generations of nothing but boys makes girls highly valuable actually and eventually it becomes equally advantageous to have either and the reason they didn't want girls ends up mostly forgotten.

China is actually the worst possible country to demonstrate a population control scheme like that. The "dead baby girls in the street" argument against it is just a straw man anywhere else.

You really want to try and sterilise a whole population? LOL some hope.

And without actually trying it, how do you know that controlled breeding would not create a chinese-style problem? People already kill children and have backstreet abortions because in the small local term they feel they should not have a child. Are you suggesting that if a whole nation was forced to that end you would not get similar events?

Methinks that the name of the group is somewhat flawed.. Human Extinction? Wtf? Using the term for the deletion of a whole species does not have the ring of even controlled breeding, but implies complete and total ending of all human life. Because that is what the word means....

That's because their stated goal actually is human extinction- for humans to cease to exist, and "nature" to take the world back once we're gone.

never heard of vertical farming, have you?

nor that people can (and do!!) live vertically. just ask japan. they squeeze a much larger population in much less of an area.

not an issue.

Yeah not easy but better than doing nothing I suppose.

Do the populations of most countries particularly care if their children are male or female? They may be disappointed if they don't get what they want but that's a far cry from feeling like the only choice they have is to kill it. Sure it will probably cause unforseen problems but I can't see them being worse than the problems overpopulation would cause. Food riots and dead bodies in the streets of people starved to death or killed for their sneakers isn't pretty either.

Yeah the name is pretty misleading but it's striking enough to get peoples attention. Some members do want to take it to the extreme of making humans vanish completely but generally its more "Voluntary (prevention of) Human Extinction".

Nah, more like Heaven's Gate... except Heaven's Gate had some sense and went and killed themselves so we didn't have to hear them b***h all the time...

And where are you going to get the energy for it? Sure you get more food but the energy requirements skyrocket.

Not so very long ago (within a lifetime) there were huge famines in various parts of Africa. At the same time there were very real and definite build ups of huge surpluses in various products. ("Butter Mountains") amongst other things. There is still famine, and there is still vast wastage. The problem is not a LACK of supplies and produce to feed the masses, but DISTRIBUTION.

People starve and die in Africa because utterly corrupt leaderships cause it to be so. The numbers are irrelevant because there are millions of hectares of arable land lying fallow simply because of ret*d sub-tribal politics and policies... Wastage and poor Distribution.

How many acres of land have been turned over to these dubious bio-fuels? How many fish thrown back dead to oceans because of ill-thought out "quotas"? How many thousands of cattle exterminated through bad animal husbandry and feeding techniques? To use a recently learned example.. how much viable horsemeat and other produce is rotting in tips and ditches in Montana through poorly conceived Slaughterhouse mismanagement policies.... Wastage and poor Distribution.

Works in fuel too. How much coal lies undug in the UK because for arcane economic reasons it is cheaper to ship it from Australia?

FFS.. there was a story about a sweetshop that buys its Polo mints from abroad because its cheaper than getting them from the manufacturer which is IN THE SAME f*****g TOWN.

In a world where such bizarre events occur, population is simply not an issue. Its all distribution and wastage.

your stated concern was land area for farming and i addressed that problem. if you didn't notice, i also said that energy concerns are a prime concern of overpopulation + technological progress.

not my fault you focus your points inefficiently.

Not my fault all I was saying is overpopulation = bad, doing nothing = screwed and people want to play resource shell games to prove that each problem is easily fixed (by making another problem much worse).

See earlier post about distribution.

Also: another flaw in the plan.. if everyone is dead, how will they know it worked?

Also.. saving nature.. we are the ONLY species capable even notionally of saving this world and its contents from a global killer event. The only ones with even a snowflakes chance in hell of preserving any remnant at all of any part of the entity that is Earth. We are the only species that even considers it a possibility. We are the only species that is fully self aware and cogniscent of its existence in the great scheme of things. We are creative, intelligent beings with infinite intellect and resource and a creation of nature itself.. so 1) Is this really the best idea we can come up with to help this world? And 2) Would it not be just as much a crime to allow us to die out as any other creature? Possibly even more so...

Sure improvements in distribution would buy us time but it doesn't solve the problem.

I have to admit, I have never heard or even thougt of this concept. What is going on around here? Putting an end to sex unless it is for procreation...Putting the suicidal out of their misery to harvest their organs...Putting an end to breeding humans for the sake of the planet...

Christmas must be coming.

Hehe nah I think just the global economic crisis is giving people the first glimpse in a long time of how fragile our world is these days and of things to come if we continue to maintain the status quo.
