The banality of everyday "possession".

This is great stuff! So Rupert appeared to you in different host bodies at different times & places?
yes, the nearest thing in movies is in 'the Matrix' film, the Hugo Weaving character, Agent Smith, you know how he becomes anyone he chooses towards the end of the movie? That movie came out well after this stuff started, it's just the closest visual representation I can think of.

Did you ever get a chance to talk to it, communicate with it? Figure out its motivations?
It (rupert) also appeared to me in dreams, that was the only place actual conversations took place. They dragged on for a year or so and if I had to summarise the content it was a temptation, he offered me worldly power and all that nonsense. I kept refusing but I'm not jesus, I can't get rid of these things that easily, he'd just keep at it, so I must have been entertaining the idea at some level. in the end i finally refused despite all sorts of threats because he revealed that i would have to 'bow down and worship' - I hadn't understood that before as I had a limited background in matters of faith and the bible. It's hard to describe why one would find these things credible in a dream but one's state of mind is rather like that of a hypnotists subject. I found it very hard to take control of the conversations in dreams and could only respond. I think I learnt from the bible not to be afraid of these encounters and to laugh at satan and that was a big turning point.

And you say it could not have been anything but spirit possession? Was there any sort of pattern to these phenomena? Sudden coldness?
no there's usually no outward sign, it's only what comes out of people mouths (their speech). I have seen some of that 'movie' type possesion over the last 15 years (over elastic bodies and impossible physical movements) but it's fairly rare. There were a number of witnessed events when I was at uni in my late thirties finishing off a degree, and at that stage it was still puzzling and frightening me. It was interesting that of the whole class only some of them saw things, it's like some people are deaf and blind to these happenings. It was only dawning on me at that stage that I was not mad, but this was real. So that's when I started reading the bible and other books to find what this phenomenon was and why it was happening. Prior to this I was agnostic and like many others assumed satan was a myth.

I don't mind telling the story, but it doesn't make sense in any rational way because that's not how the supernatural world works.

This sounds like some sort of delusional disorder. I think you're interpreting unusual events and general weirdness in a more and more convoluted and "spiritual" way. The guy who took the axe sounds like a nutcase, but your reaction was a little weird too (there's no way of gauging what psychopathology drove him to do it from that isolated example).
I think your experiences here, or your interpretation of them, is a perfect example of the psychotic nature of religious thought and experience.

The only other arena (apart from faith) where you find the notion of possession taken seriously is strangely enough, the psychiatric world. When I went looking for info on this matter, I was amazed at the extent to which MPD is regarded as possession by credible scientific types.

MPD and demonic possession are separate phenomena, although in many cases MPD is and has been mistaken for demonic possession. The rise of psychiatric medicine is probably why the Catholic Church no longer performs exorcisms.
