This is the difficulty that non-Jews face when understanding the Jewish people. Judaism is a culture as well as a religion. This is the problem many converts face when they adopt Judaism for whatever reason (marriage, for one, and another is desire to become Jewish). One is born Jewish through a Jewish mother and the other is formal conversion. Having Jewish fathers, grandparents, etc is not sufficient for recognition, according to Rabbinic sources I consulted.
People can check on-line if they need further clarification.

Creationists are primarily self deluded. What makes them obnoxious is that they wish to impose their delusions on the rest of us by either annoyance or by force of law. Recall that there were laws in some states that forbade the teaching of Darwin's theory. If a Creationist wants to believe that the earth was created from chaos on the evening of Oct 22, 4004 B.C.E (Bishop Ussher's calculation) that is his business. If he want to force my kids and yours to learn that nonsense in a publicly funded school that is my business AND your business.
We all have beliefs that are not totally justified by the facts or first hand knowledge. We can't avoid that. What we can avoid is trying for force or beliefs on other folks.
