For people with strong beliefs and no doubts honesty can create quite nasty situations.

Humans have a psychological need to feel they are doing the right thing. Even Hitler and Stalin believed they were doing what was best.

I don't know, I think there's a certain appeal in feeling evil and wretched, something that I seem to recall Dostoevsky channeling.

Now that's something that sends chills up my spine. No doubt people who are viciously good do some really horrible things but those equally delighted with evil are probably worse. I'm the kind of guy who picks up street litter and dumps it into the closest garbage can, who is disgusted by the average graffiti scrawl on a nice neutral wall (although I am delighted by a really good and skilled piece of graffiti), who finds no sensible reason for dog crap on the sidewalk or people's lawns or can only recoil at unnecessary impoliteness or deliberately broken public conveniences. Perhaps I'm a rather odd human.

Yeah, no one likes to admit they've done something wrong. Most evil people truly believe what they're doing is good.
