"It is individuals who have rights, not religions," Ottawa's representative told the body. "Canada believes that to extend (the notion of) defamation beyond its proper scope would jeopardize the fundamental right to freedom of expression, which includes freedom of expression on religious subjects."
Religionists are doing their best to squeeze Islam into the West by any and all means at their disposal.
You are not allowed to disagree with their religion though - it would be discrimination and illegal.
Religion in Canada topic
In my country religion is more of a hobby and not a lobby and no one faith has the upper hand. Religion is part of multiculturalism and and anyone is free to practice but not to get pushy with it. In Canada religion and politics are separate. Works here.

Two points ...
1. The truth is usually a defense to a claim of defamation, though I am not clear on the UN definition. If a false statement is required, a statement denouncing a religion would only be a human rights violation if the statement is proven false. This is not possible when you are dealing with "beliefs." Where defamation can be shown is where a discriminatory statement is made about those who practice a religion, such as saying that all people of a certain religion want to blow up England.
2. If I am a member of one religion and subscribe to their religious beliefs, aren't I impliedly stating that other religions are false? For example, doesn't living as a Catholic involve defaming other religious beliefs?
Anyone who wants to tell me I can't share my thoughts in a civil manner, because of the contents of my thoughts can KMA. I not only have a right to free speech, but my AS tends to reinforce my political incorrect speech regardless of rules.

The thought occurred to me too. However, the Muslims know how to resolve inter-faith discussions:
Gulfnews.com reported on Aug. 12, 2008 that her father, a member of the religious police or Commission for Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice, cut out her tongue and burned her to death “following a heated debate on religion.” Al-Mutairi had written about hostilities from family members after they discovered she was a Christian, including insults from her brother after he saw her Web postings about her faith. Some reports indicated that her brother was the one who killed her.
She had reportedly written an article about her faith on a blog of which she was a member under the nickname “Rania” a few days before her murder.

WTF, that's terrible...but not surprising.
Islam only does crap like that because they know that very few people would voluntarily go near their crackpot faith with a bargepole. (Case in point. ^^)

I do not subscribe to Muslim extremism nor think it should be tolerated but there are a lot of black Americans who have converted to Islam.

The majority of Islamic African-Americans do not follow strict sharia law.
According to Islamic holy scriptures.....Conversion from Islam to another faith is punishable by death. Torture prior to death is allowed. A very painful death is not forbidden. Sometimes it is considered to be an obligatory sacred duty. Sharia Law.
Fortunately not all followers of Islam are irrational. Most seem pleasant reasonable folk. But if they ever should want to become irrational, they have their holy texts to back them up.
When a religion condones and gives rewards for killing innocents or infidels...it is in violation of civil law. But Sharia short-circuits civil law and is considered by the faithful to be above civil law.

Well said...I could not have said it better myself.

It's just a cheap trick to add some appearance of legitimacy for regions with mulim majorities to silence and proselytize everyone else at gunpoint. Such a peaceful religion. ![]()

Absolutely ridiculous. Anyone should be able to profess their beliefs, even counter-beliefs, without reprisal from the government. It may be arrogant to assume one's correct, but it's infinitely worse to deliberately stifle freedom. A human being without freedom is a biological calculator.

The question is, which holy texts?
Many Muslims refer to other sources aside from the Koran, and it's these other sources that often justify extremist behavior. Yet ironically only the Koran was written by Mohammad, so they may not even be following a path of their religion that their founder intended.

It's whatever mix of texts the militant fundamentalist cleric tells the illiterate goat herders it says.

The law covers all religions, not just Islam.
What I want to know is whether it covers new religions. Because if it does I think I'll have a prophetic dream about how important it is to be able to criticize other religions. And if you disagree with my prophecy - I'll have you arrested for insulting Drizzlemanity ![]()
