Are religions unfair to women?

In the Koran there are several places where beating your wife is given the thumbs up. One story you'll come across sometimes is that science has proven this is the best way. "Science" says that there are two kinds of women. The masochist and the sadist. Masochists want a beating and sadists need one.

This guy is funny and says the usual things but you'll notice that when he starts to talk about science and "three types of women", they cut it. That might be a riff on the above slogan or something else entirely.

Ah, It is a variant that he goes back to. Here there are three types of women who can't live without beatings so it's not talking about all women. Women who were raised with beatings, women who are condescending and women who are just plain twisted.

I think that most religions are extremely patriarchal and mysoginous. That is one of the reasons why I have a bit of a problem with them. An example of that mysogynie is the fact that all of the most important religious figures are male. From Jesus to Mohammed. I have had an on and off interest in Buddhism as a way of life for a relatively long time but even Buddhism has patriarchal aspects to it that are discirminatory against woman. Not to mention the fact that the Buddha himself is male as well ofcourse.

I do respect the fact that religions are a source of solace and support to many people but they make me feel weary and sometimes even suspicious. Tolerance, free thinking and open mindedness in general are aspects I don't immediately associate with religion.
