Lincoln believed the war was God's punishment on the whole country: not just the south for having slavery, but also for the north for allowing it to continue for so long.

It was a punishment for the north, as well. How many fathers, brothers, sons, nephews, or friends never returned to loved ones? How many returned maimed or broken?

I'm sorry but the last time I checked the north didn't have to deal with THEIR cities and crops being burned to the ground or chaos and corrupton in their states during the reconstruction. They also did not have to deal with the shame and humilation of having lost the war over 150 years later.
Yeah, I'm sure those poor yankees suffered SO much from that civil war! Considering they won.

Of course not, but they get to go down forever in American history as the racist villains who deserved everything they got plus more while the Union are remembered as these brave and heroic White Saviors of the North who stood for equality and African American rights. Even though they treated freed black people and black soldiers within their own ranks with the same contempt that white southerners in the south did, and many black women in the south were more likely to be raped by Union soldiers than white women and their soldiers went largely unpunished for it. Oh and even after they were freed black people were not given the same rights as white people in this country until literally a century later.

Actually, a great deal of post Civil War popular history and historical fiction until a few decades ago had been very Pro-Confederacy. Woodrow Wilson had praised Birth Of A Nation in it's depiction of the KKK as the good guys, and the freed slaves as evil savages.

I'm not discussing fiction, I'm discussing facts. And yeah, I know that up until the Civil Rights movement the North hated black people too and some had sympathies for the Confederates who they romanticized. I can see why such works of fiction used to be popular for this entire country until the 1960's.
You know something? Most educated black people will tell you that the north was and always has been just as racist as the south and they are very aware of how the north denies it by claiming that winning the civil war somehow makes up for all the other racist s**t they were equally guilty of.
My mom's friend from college once told her she thought all white people are the same, and sometimes I think she's right.
