The fact of the matter is, the Republicans of the Civil War era had been the liberal, pro-federal party. It had been the Democrats who had been the pro-states rights, small government, conservative party.
And as a matter of fact, there were plenty of southerners who were pro-Union. Not only were they the black slaves who yearned for freedom, but there were many whites who had either headed north to fight in the Union army, or who had stayed at home to carry on non-stop guerrilla warfare against the confederacy. Unfortunately, most whites in the south had sided with the confederate cause, and despite revisionist attempts to make their struggle a fight for states rights, the fact of the matter was, it was really about slavery.

It was about "states rights" to uphold the cruel and immoral institutions of slavery and racism. Also, defending and favoring social power heirarchies is something inherently conservative.

Back in the days of the Civil War racism was alive and active all over the United States, both North and South. In the present day, racism is alive and active in all parts of the United States. You want to see racism? Visit Boston MA. Particularly Southie. There are more racists per square foot on D Street than there ever were in Dixie.

Well, this thread is about how to identify a right-wing nut job.

If you see a bunch of fat, late-middle aged men, flying together on a luxury private jet, to a well-known sex-tourist destination, with a crate full of viagra (that was not prescribed to any member of the party), then you know for sure that you are looking at a bunch of right-wing nut jobs.

I'm not even a supporter racial affirmative action. Yet I've never felt that I was discriminated against for being white, I just think racial affirmative action gives racist people a horrible excuse to question/stigmatize successful minorities. Affirmative action should be based on financial status, not race.

But the notion that whites are disadvantaged and discriminated against based on their race is ridiculous and insulting to those who have had to deal with real discrimination. Hence the :roll: .

Talk to the candidates for joining the fire department who score -the highest- on the entry tests and were turned down in favor of minority candidates who score lower, just because of Affirmative Action quotas.

When the superior candidate is turned away in favor of the inferior candidate because of race, it is most certainly racial discrimination.

ah, let's open another can of worms! When those who score the higest on the entry test can't pass the physical tests because the equipment used is scaled to upper body strength and height and weight requirements it goes beyond racial discrimination.
