^ Yes, Joker, I'm very familiar with Gerry Adams. But you keep typing 'Garry', which leads me to believe that he hasn't really had such a big impact on you as you'd have us all believe (and not until very recently either).

My bad I kept spelling his name wrong. I meant to spell Gerry not Garry  Also I think in 2014 in Ireland they will have a vote on Ireland being a independent republic. At least that is the hopes for Sinn Fein to accomplish this goal.

You really haven't got a bloody clue have you?

The referendum in 2014 is to determine whether Scotland should remain in the United Kingdom or whether they want to vote for "independence" (ha!). And it's the SNP who are spearheading that referendum - nothing to do with Sinn Féin (who are based on a completely different island to the one Scotland is on)!

Mummy_of_Peanut will know more about it than I (as I haven't really been following the debate up there) as she herself lives in Scotland.

OK then Abhcóide Mheiriceá saoirse na hÉireann, show me the link on the Sinn Féin website.

Also, Sinn Féin's surge in popularity is not related to nationalist matters in the Republic but is mainly about their populist sentiments on the economy. They are the second-largest party in Northern Ireland though.

And a very popular one I might add even amoung Irish Americans. Sinn Fien is also for Irish nationalism.

Sinn Fein wants referendum on Irish unification.

There wouldn't be any point in having one in Northern Ireland because the populace would reject unification by a large majority. The Nationalist minority would not turn out in large numbers to vote for a referendum now (due to the dire state of the Republic's economy) and Sinn Féin know that.

And that news story is from six months ago.

It doesn't really matter that much if Irish-Americans like Sinn Féin or not. Unionists in Northern Ireland have had enough of many Irish-Americans and their bankrolling of IRA terrorists, money which was used to murder off-duty police officers, census collectors and bomb majority Unionist towns in Northern Ireland and set off bombs to butcher defenceless men, women and children in English towns and cities. There was no glory in any of it.

So a woman in her early twenties, who had no interest in politics whatsoever and was due to get married to her boyfriend and were trying to have a normal life, deserved to have a full magazine of bullets sprayed into her and her boyfriend just because they were Protestants?! Or what about men who were ex-police officers? Or people who were part-time members of the Army and who worked in their father's shop, just getting on with life as best they can? Or children who happened to be in the same car as their police officer father? Or normal men and women just going to church to pray? Or ordinary people enjoying a meal in a hotel? Did they deserve to be literally burned alive by thugs who laughed and continue to laugh and commemorate people who were responsible for their deaths? (As do some of the Orange lodges and flute bands. Equally disgraceful.)

You're a sick, sick person. There was no romance in what they did. They killed thousands. The same applies to the Loyalists, who chose completely innocent people - easy targets - just because they happened to be Catholics. Not for any other reason, just because they were Catholics.

None of which has any relevance to what we're discussing. Northern Ireland's people were mainly happy in the UK, although a significant minority weren't. They instituted a 30-year-long campaign of terror on their fellow Irishmen in order to force them into bending to their will. (And Loyalist Irishmen retaliated by butchering innocent Catholics in order to get them to stop.)

So reaching deep, deep in the historical past looking for an excuse to murder people who had nothing to do with the events that happened back then is alright by you is it?

By that yardstick, a Native American terrorist group could murder you due to some disgusting atrocity one of your long-dead ancestors committed.

It's just an excuse for bigotry and hate.

So should all people with German ancestry be punished for something hitler caused?

Seeing how I am Native American descant they will not target me. The British gave the Irish a reason I mean who wouldn't get mad for lives of innocent irish protesters. Being gundown for simply protesting in a peacful manner?

Are you sure you have no planter blood in you? Even if they weren't, these terrorists probably wouldn't care what you were too much anyway. They're not going to look for a family tree before they off you.

What the British forces did that day was wrong. However, hundreds of people a year were being killed at that time by republican and loyalist terrorists. An RUC police officer was killed in Londonderry very shortly before the march. Soldiers were under fire that day. So, whilst I think it's disgraceful what the soldiers did - and the fact that no-one will be prosecuted is even more so - it has to be looked at what happened since then. The British Army spent 30 years trying to stop certain Irishmen from butchering each other - no easy task. Without the Army (and the police) Northern Ireland could well have gone into full civil war.

And as for "the British gave the Irish a reason" - what the British might or might not have done 400 years ago shouldn't be used as an excuse to murder people who had nothing to do with any of those things.
