Interesting. I wonder if that's why so many people we outside when I drove by the high school earlier.

I haven't seen much about job action in the US, so I guess better luck next time.

I guess how I should have worded that is that there doesn't appear to be anything directly connected with this talk even if there's the other ongoing actions at John Deere and Kellogg's.

I don't think any of those would appease the told-ya-sos.

As for the rest, if they have never done anything for my personal benefit, then I have no reason to care about them.

Absolutely!

The problem is workers who have never done anything for the personal benefit of others expect -- no, they demand that those others should care enough about them to give them full financial support for nothing in return.

I do all I can to ensure good pay and a safe working environment at my place of employment, and will even "cover" for the hourly workers there; but to expect me to give a tinker's damn about some underpaid day-laborer whom I have never even met is an expectation that goes way beyond ridiculous.

Then you could have given them the day off so they could help the underpaid day laborer that fixes the plumbing in your building, or patches the roof, makes sure your heating and cooling is working and all the other manual jobs.
A hospital or other facility wouldn’t be in operation long if there weren’t ditch diggers to keep the water flowing.They deserve a living wage with benefits.

First off, you presume too much.

Second, all anyone needs to do around here is to ask for the day off -- they do not even need to give a reason why, as long as they have enough "comp time" on the books.

Third, we contract with a professional service that sends us only well-trained and licensed union workers to handle our plumbing, electrical, and other environmental needs.

Fourth, drinking water does not flow to us through ditches (just what third-world country do you live in, anyway?), and if you google the name "Ditch Witch", you will learn a thing or two about how those trenches are actually dug here is the good old U. S. of A.

Finally, workers do deserve living wages, provided they actually work for those wages.

I know what a ditch witch is and they don’t operate without a person.My son works heavy equipment, dozers, skidders, backhoe etc..,Does John Deere ring a bell? etc..And I also see some digging still done by hand with good old shovels on construction sites.
How nice that your employees have a Union and well paying jobs and can take a day off when they want.It would be even nicer if they cared that others have the same option.
And here you go, a ditch digger aka ditch witch by John Deere.

Actually, ours is not a "union shop", mainly because the hourly people seem to have never seriously entertained the idea.

We just value the people who work here.

It is the contractors who do the "Prevailing Wage" work around here that are almost all unionized. As long as they continue to complete their contracts correctly and on time (or better), they will continue to receive more contracts. I have noticed that when manual labor is needed, many of the equipment operators will climb down from their cabs, grab a shovel, and start digging -- no need to cruise the Home Depot parking lots looking for day laborers.

You really should get out more; the labor-management situation in this locale is not as dire as you imagine.
