Never mind insects. What about humans and robots? Could the robots ever misunderstand or misinterpret the 3 laws in such a way as to be catastrophic for mankind? These 3 laws are, in a way, the scripture we hand down to them.

I find the current presidential campaign very amusing. Debating about health care, oil drilling rights, who has a more authentic lower middle-class upbringing, etc. How many people missed the sign that said 'Shit Creek'? Of these, how many are aware that they don't have a paddle?

Chever keeps broadly hinting that huge and terrifying developments are underway in military robotics and those in charge not only know what they are doing but that their forces are unstoppable. No doubt a bit of what he says is true but revealed accidents such as automatic robot guns going out of control and killing people before they could be stopped is only the tip of the iceberg. Already the basic Asimov laws are being openly breached in military robots aside from the fact that no one can instruct a machine to know who is and who is not a human and thereby influence a chain of reactions that has no regard for humans.

The extremely intelligent and aware team that built the first atomic bombs at the end of WWII was largely horrified at their use by Truman to massacre hundreds of thousands of people who were on the point of surrendering anyway. The people in charge of robotics, or any other advanced military systems today are in general not really morally concerned about their end use. And it is such a novel and unexplored field in the matter of final social results that no one can predict its final outcome. Just today a scientific notice was issued that basic cellular modifications can imitate the effects of electric eel cells to produce electricity from organic cell reaction efficiently enough to generate electricity to power implanted medical devices. This can become a critical bridge between humans and robots so that cyborgs might, in the relatively near future, meld robots and humans into something altogether new. This is probably the future.

Maybe, barring widespread revulsion to these kinds of modifications, plus costs that would be prohibitive for many, if not most people.

It suppose it's possible, but that kind of ... salvation would be so unjust. But there's no point in complaining about injustice. It has to be fought actively.

Just because you might be revolted by a sensible blend of organic and inorganic machines does not mean that they will be rejected. The six million dollar man may have been fantasy but an implant of a computer with internet connections into my brain might be extremely tempting and, if useful enough, no more expensive than a reasonably priced car. Of course, computer viruses then take on an entirely new viewpoint.

Yeah, in that scenario a computer virus could kill you.

In that scenario, how much time do you guess will pass before pharmaceutical companies make another mountain of money selling antivirus and debugging tools?

Then we'll realize that maybe it wasn't a good idea to put the Internet in our brains.

I'm not. In fact, the first electronic enhancement I would want would be some kind of built-in theorem prover. Or maybe a GPS with various kinds of shortest-path finding. The possibilities are endless.

I wouldn't mind having my nervous system tightened up, like in Neuromancer.
