Was Tarek Fatah one of them?

An admirable man, but his views are not exactly shared by all Muslims, as you should know from the fact that Fatah was forced to retreat from the public eye for fear of his family's safety. And the "moderate" Muslims I know have some very troubling views. Islam, as I have seen it, stands in direct opposition to a free society.

Ragtime,

I am going to ask you to accept that there are intelligent, rational, moral, and even deeply religious Christian people who believe, with all their heart, that an unborn child in certain stages is not a viable "life" that can be murdered. And to accept that in a democratic society these intelligent, rational, moral and religious people have a right to act within their own conscious. You may work to persuade them differently, but you cannot and should not deny them that courtesy. It is the foundation for all we believe in as a society.

And I say that as one who does NOT believe as they do, but believes, in my own conscious, that it is a baby I would never abort.

But I HAVE engaged in lengthy conversations with such people, and have come to understand that they did not reach their positions lightly nor for selfish reasons.

You cannot equate unborn beings that are not viable outside of the womb with born individuals who were quite aware of what was being done to them and why. At the early stages, the fetus truly is a collection of cells with the potential to become a human being. Much by the hand of God can change that reality. 20% of pregnancies miscarry in the first trimester. Many others will go wrong of their own accord long before birth. And a human embryo looks exactly like most animal embryos. Its the programming, of course, that is different.

And that collection of cells cannot live without its mother. Yes, it becomes a whole different story once the fetus is viable outside of the womb, and past that I find it quite difficult for anyone to argue it isn't a human life, but then new considerations kick in, like how medical difficulties might weight the life of the mother against the life of the unborn. And so on.

Sharing everything from all the conversations I've had would take hours, and I don't have hours to spend on it. But it is wrong to place what is essentially your own personal opinion above those of a very large group of people, and say they are wrong to the point of needing coersion, and you hold the only truth.

That is, in the end, the problem I have with the pro-life movement as it currently exists. While I have saved specific unborn babies from abortion because of my conversations with their mothers, I cannot see myself as part of a movement that refuses to see the complexities in life and respect the difficult decisions made by others. I saved lives by showing women choices, not by taking them away.

You're asking too much - acceptance, something Ragtime will not give to anyone he feels superior to - which is nearly everyone who doesn't agree with him. :(

I'm pretty sure Ragtime has long since detached from this thread. He seems to get legitimate enjoyment from needling people with these threads, and then he gets bored after a couple days and makes a new thread with a new "angle" on doing the same thing. He hasn't posted in this thread in several days (ever since he made the "liberals/Israel bombing" thread), and I wouldn't be surprised if he didn't even read it anymore. And now that Israel thread is 8 pages long, and he hasn't posted in it since page 1, and has turned his attention to Obama. I think it's the emotions he stirs, more so than the content of his arguments, that truly strokes his sense of intellectual superiority, which is what he is doing (under the guise of flexing his sense of moral superiority  )

Well ...

You never know what other like-minded people may be reading.

Yea that's true.

I'm just now seeing Ragtime's pattern on this stuff, as I am new here. I probably don't need to be telling you this, I'm just sick of wasting my energy on long, detailed responses to his nonsense.

In other words, I'm really glad you didn't spend hours breaking down your conversations trying to strike some kind of chord in Ragtime, although I would have loved to hear about them myself...

If you have done that, that is awesome. I am pro-choice, but I am also adopted, and as such my attitude towards the issue is conflicted in a lot of ways. I think "rational" people on both sides of the issue can agree that one way or another, it is something that requires a great deal of thought and discourse, whatever the end result.

I'm not AS myself, at least we don't think so (my son is). That obscure fact point to fact thing isn't my debate style. I'm a very persuasive debater in real life and on NT forums, but I don't like to delve into all the minutiae required to really debate here. I was just bored earlier today. And I thought I could offer an entirely different angle, that maybe hadn't been brought up yet (I didn't read all the pages here). Since I DO approach things differently.

I've certainly been a part of it. How large a part I'll never know for sure. I have a low key conversation with a friend, suggest some options to consider. She later tells me she is having the baby. I know from these conversations that women often feel abortion is the ONLY viable option; you can't scare them out of that. You have to present something better. Help them see. Very few pro-life activists get that point, unfortunately - they really don't WANT to, it seems. Part of what turned me completely cold to that movement. But, yes, there ARE rational people on both sides who all want the same thing: less unwanted pregnancies, no abortions. The disagreement is mostly about what has to be done to get there.

a very common misconception is abortion=birth control, no abortion is usally something of last resort due to price and trauma, people abort because they feel they have to

problem is, a lot of pro lifers want to have their cake and eat it. They are against condoms and most birth control methods, problem is they are the greatest thing to reduce pregancy that actaulyl work (abstinence doesn't, don't beleive me, go look at the Texas pregnancy rate)

Not all of them. My AP Gov teacher was a big pro-lifer, and she advocated passing out condoms in high schools- a very radical thing to promote in conservative Butler County, Ohio. But a lot of the religious Puritans are extremely opposed to premarital sex.

that is why I said A LOT, not all, because some do, some don't.

Yea dude and we are not talking about those pro-lifers, just as we are not talking about the pro-choicers who think that abortion is a lark and a source of amusement.

You're steering the discussion back in the wrong direction, and the only explanation I can think of as to why is that I bet you didn't even read the 8 posts preceding your last one.

George Tiller could be regretting this now!

In a way I think he was asking for it. Plus it saved the lives of unborn kids for him to be shot.
Believe me as a Christian I feel guilty for thinking about it that way I guess I'm just not sure how to take it.
Even if he was a heartless individual he was still human.

He definitely wasn't a heartless individual.
