Question About Evolution
I think the biggest problem that will be encountered over and over again is that there are people who don't want to learn anything about science or the natural world around them. No one can put knowledge and understanding into another's mind, they have to do that themselves. If they want to believe a fairy tale about how life came into being, they will. They won't learn about the science of evolution, and therefore cannot possibly understand. But it's evolution's fault and God is the only answer. Sigh.
I have no patience for anyone who makes up their mind about anything without learning about it first.
I know I said I wouldn't post anymore, but I couldn't in good conscience let such a slimy lie go unchallenged. Accepting evolution does NOT necessarily mean "understanding that God was not involved in any creation process."
I don't read it that way. I think MarketandChurch agrees with you. Try this:
Statement 1: Evolution doesn't challenge the existence of a God
Statement 2: only the understanding that God was not involved in any creation process excludes the existence of any God.
Seeing the two statements as alternatives instead of equivalent is at least a possible interpretation.
Read that way, which is probably the way it was meant to be read, IS something I mostly agree with except I would not say "the understanding that God was not involved..." because to say there is understanding of that implies that the nonexistence of God is something that can be understood while I do not think that is the case. If we really knew enough to "understand" this subject, we would be like Gods ourselves (maybe we are, but it sure looks to me like we're a bunch of crazed monkeys).
Still, even if we agree on some things, MarketAndChurch uses the oogity boogity incredible complexity and astronomical odds arguments that have been shown to be bogus arguments, has not answered the questions I asked him about the genetic evidence for evolution, grossly misrepresents the quality of the fossil record, and denies that the fossil record DOES show humans and tortoises have a common ancestor. MarketAndChurch also asks to see calculations of what it would take to turn a zebra into a whale. First, that is NOT how evolution works, and second, there is a well-documented series of transitional fossils that do clearly show the transition from land animals to whales, and examining the DNA of living species also produces the same tree of life as is found in the fossil record.
The bottom line is that MarketAndChurch is apparently not stupid, but since he is not stupid and has been told about the evidence he can't claim ignorance unless he willfully refuses to look at that evidence, which puts MarketAndChurch into either the insane or the wicked category. The Discovery Institute are well known for their sleazy slimy sneaky dishonest tactics, weasel words and BS definitions that are NOT meant to aid understanding but instead to spread confusion and lies so they can institute their theocratic agenda to repeal the enlightenment and send America and the world back to the Dark Ages. They are EVIL!
What Kills Thought?
Yes but I don't ever cite the authors of my opinions because of the emotional investment people have in socialism, evolution, feminism, whatever theory or ism we are discussing. We should be free to entertain everything and anything, free thinking. It closes peoples ear before a discussion can be had. I mention Michael Behe, or Robert Kagan, or Ross Douthat, or Thomas Sowell, and the conversation is killed on the spot. Also, we do agree on my statement about Evolutionists and gods existence.
How Can We Differ?
Evolution works in exactly the way I have put it. I am merely asking the questions of how it goes about doing what it does. So it is fine if we look at the same thing, and:
- 1.) It makes you wonder in awe at the complex processes that must have taken place to go from Fish to man, and
2.) I find skepticism in an almost impossible theory
Matter of fact, both are legitimate responses, both we can occupy and switch between, because in the final analysis, we have absolutely nothing to work with considering what evolution logically demands.... all of this is in great faith. You should have some or at least one or maybe two lingering questions of its impossibility, and, equally, I am in complete awe and wonder when I entertain the idea, considering all that has to work, and work right, to make it workable... my finite imagination grounds me. For example, in order for the eyesight of the human to evolve to that of a cheetah or any animal who has slightly better eyesight then the human being, our optical nerves have to be increased. What guides that? What mutates the brain to begin producing more photoreceptive membranes to account for the data coming in? What reroutes connections in the brain and nervous system to account for these changes, because every change effects other systems, what, how, and why do these mutations happen, and how do they all happen at once or in the appropriate sequence to make them happen at all? What sustains the morphing of a zebra or a rabbit into a whale over millions of years, and assuming Darwinian evolution is true, with the possibilities of certain genetic codes turning on and off at random(with variations that are up to 2 to the 25,000th power), where are the billions of potential offshoots? That zebra could have mutated one way and if herds of it became isolated, which inevitably would happen, after a while could have developed into other mammalian like creatures in the ocean, especially when we give ourselves hundreds of millions of years....
But instead we have a Zebra, or a rabbit, and we have a whale, and not much else in between other then 7 examples which could be slotted in an evolutionary way. I don't think that those 7 working examples in the fossil records discards evolution. I am skeptical, however, when people look at 7 working examples of a whale link the two. Even if we had 48 examples, to use your number, 48 isolated mutated examples would account for what exactly? The eyelids evolving for marine use? Lactation systems reorganized? If we have 7 examples, and the process took a billion mutations in every system in the animal adapting to marine life, could this be the same animal, offshoots of the animal, the questions are endless. The benefits that a whale has evolved are not the only benefits a sea creature can have, and considering the gagillions of potential evolutionary traits a sea creature could take on for survival, we could/should not only have millions of working examples of the links between a land walking mammal and a whale, but also millions or even billions of working examples of other creatures that the process should have spawned. My questions should be yours as well, and the answers to them we should declare unknowable until we have evidence beyond patchwork theories.
The Discovery Institute and Education
I must also add that I have consistently opposed the teaching of anything other then Darwinian evolution in a scientific setting. Though I don't agree with it and even with all the holes it has, micro evolution is something every person I can imagine prescribes to. It won't affect whether you make a great geneticist or physicist. It's only one 1/2 of 1/3 of the natural sciences taught in k-12 education, it's not a big deal. In a philosophical setting, Intelligent Design is perfectly fine, and you shouldn't have a single objection to that. I don't support creationism, and it has no place in the classroom, in science in general, and especially in religion.
This is a masterpiece of epic NON communication.
Youve written several paragraphs without actually making any point- save one.
The one point you ARE making is that you admit, not admit BOAST, that you're a cheater.
You claim its your civic to cheat by constantly moving the goal post.
You demand missing links.
When the world delivers missing links, you demand links BETWEEN those missing links.
When the world gives you those missing missing links- you demand links between THOSE links, and so and so on...
When we reach the goal post, you just pick it up and move it farther afield. And not only do you not apologize for that-you declare it to be your civic duty to keeping moving the goal post as often as you see fit.
Whatever.
But besides that -the rest of this post is beating around several bushes.
So since you fail to make any actual further points ( besides admitting to moving the goal post) the reader has to do the work of figuring out what the heck you are saying.
But based on this and on your subsequent posts- a reader can glean some idea where the heck you're coming from.
Apparently you seemed to be begging for BOTH sides to burn you at the stake for being a heretic!
You seemed to be accepting of the idea that the earth is old, and (this is the curious part) that the species of organisms on Earth are in fact the product of gradual change over time (there is a word for that- its called "evolution"- as opposed to instaneous creation followed by a eternal nonchange- which is called 'creation').
You actually believe in (a kind of) "evolution"- but you still are opposed to what you call "evolution"( promulgated by some shadowy group you call "evolutionists"-whoever they are) -which is actually just one particular theory of evolutiion ( evolution through natural selection ala Darwin). Although it is the dominant theory of evolution in the scientific community today.
But your beef is not with the "evolution" part - but with the 'natural selection' part. you're suggesting that there IS evolution, but that God guided evolution.
If that is indeed your belief then that makes you a "christian evolutionist". Which in the eyes of orthodox christians is the worst kind of heretic that there is!
So you're hell bent on sticking it to both the secular scientific community AND to the Christian fundamentalist and evangelical community!
Is that correct?
The biggest problem I have with MarketAndChurch is his inconsistency. In one post earlier in this thread he says he doesn't have a problem with the ape to man link, but he does with fish to man. Then in another post he says we do NOT have fossil evidence of ape to man transition when in fact we do have several transitions including some that clearly show an ape that started to walk upright like a man. He has made several assertions that are not true, that are contrary to fact, and when challenged he ignores correction and goes on to make more wrong assertions and spew pseudoscientific babble.
He says we have seven examples he knows of showing the transition from land animals to whales, but then apparently says we need to be able to explain and document every mutation that causes every morphological change in the transition and find fossils from every generation (if not every individual of every generation!) before he can accept that land animals evolved into whales.
He also has not yet addressed the strongest evidence of all, the patterns of nested hierarchies in many different types of data when comparing DNA of different species that all produce the same tree of life as is found in the fossil record, and he does not answer why or how the fossil record would show a clear transition over time in the sequence of fossils showing for example horse evolution, or whale evolution, or human evolution, if evolution did NOT happen.
There is so much evidence for evolution that it is difficult to pick just a few of the best evidences for it, but here are some of my favorites:
* NESTED HIERARCHIES of many different types of data including the placement of endogenous retroviruses in DNA.
* Human chromosome 2 shows many clear signs of being two ape chromosomes fused together.
* Archaeopteryx was found just about the time Darwin published The Origin of Species and is still a spectacular example of a transitional form.
* Tiktaalik was found just in the past decade exactly when and where it was expected to be found if evolution were true. We have found a fossil fish with legs just like those Darwin fish on atheists' cars!
*Ambulocetus and other fossils found in the past twenty or thirty years have greatly added to our understanding of whale evolution. We have found fossils of whales with legs!
* Lucy was found in the 1970s. She is one of the best examples of a transitional hominid fossil with some features perfectly intermediate between humans and other modern apes.

Points Being Answered
No one's answered any of my points either. Do go back and reread every post I have ever made, this isn't a debate, it is merely two sides throwing points at each other, if you want to dance around my points, that is fine, none of my critiques have been answered, I answer you all regularly.
You asked, in the post that I quoted, about a workable example of macroevolution. I provided you with one. Explain to me how this is dancing around your point?
Two sides throwing points at each other... man that sounds awfully like a debate to me...
My Response:
I don't know anything about that horse and its mammalian ancestor and do not know where to start in researching it and why it has what it has. Your demands of explaining the horse by a visual is simplistic. WE KNOW ABSOLUTELY NOTHING from looking at those pictures. I don't know the fossil record and what we have to work with, there are large collapses of time, millions of years between each example(according to the diagram), I don't know the reasons it abandoned 5 toes for 1 hoove. Please post images of the fossils we have that we then constructed the ancestors you see in that picture.
What's this? You don't know? Why is that hardly surprising...
You will find the following link highly informative: Click Me To Educate Yourself
I can simply look at these simplistic drawings and draw homological similarities, and say that since they look similar, they are the same, which they may be. If they are the same creature, then they are. But it is just definitional. Give me a month to study it, and feel free to educate me as well while I learn about it. Specifically, why it evolved the way it evolved.
If you are so ignorant of the subject that you require a month to put together a basic understanding of what happened and our current theory as to why, why are you even here talking about it? You're admitting to not knowing what you're talking about. This is why no one can take you seriously, you do not understand what you are talking about.
Materialism:
Materialism also dictates that matter is all there is. Matter. Entropy, does not exist. Neither does time, or numerical values. Neither does force. Physical terms can only be used descriptively to define a mode that matter occupies. That is it. Fields don't exist, nothing to be frank, if it is not material. That relates to my definition of naturalism. Darwinists believe our beginnings were within the confines of naturalism, and that the material world is all there is. The super natural and the non-material do not exist, ruling out the possibility of a spirit of higher consciousness.
[u][b]
1: ...Darwinists? Darwin was undoubtedly an intelligent man, but he didn't have access to the same knowledge we do today. He put forth the basic workings of evolution, and we have expounded upon and corrected that basic theory as we learned more about what actually happened. Science in motion, aint it beautiful? Anyway, there are no "Darwinists".
2: I'd like to enquire as to where you learned that definition of materialism, because no scientist would ever subscribe to it. Not a one. We know that it's wrong. We know that fields exist (magnets anyone?), we know that force exists, we know that entropy exists, we know that time exists (or, at the very least, are incapable of figuring out how the universe works if it doesn't). Our theory as to why and how they work may not be correct, but we know that these things do exist. None of that is supernatural either.
As far as numerical values go, that's a more debatable point. Numbers, in their base form, don't actually exist. Numbers are just something we use to define something else. A healthy human hand, for example, is defined as having five fingers. The number five itself doesn't exist, it's just a measurement. Much like litres, grams, and metres.
3: I repeat myself yet again and say that none of this has anything to do with evolution, which happens to be the topic at hand. We aren't discussing how life came to be, we're discussing how it went from what it started as to what it is today and why.[\b][\u]
My answers are within the above quote in bolded and underlined text.

I am still going through the judge's decision in the Dover case (this link), and you can see the basics of the playbook of the ID movement to shroud their real intentions and be sneaky to get it in if you scroll peek around in it. The most interesting part is the secrecy in how they obtained the ID book (page 113) and the perjury involved.
I honestly do not know how any movement would go without a structured campaign and expect to survive. Atheists play by the exact blueprint, makes you wonder if the people hear themselves. You act like this is a power move foreign to atheism.
You don't believe that someone could seriously believe in intelligent design.
Which is why ID is labeled as dishonest, because, since you cannot imagine a normal person believing in it, there must be bad intentions involved that are not science related like their just trying to feed off of and cash in on misinformed peoples fears, or, they are just anti-science for religious power, respect, and prestige. You also don't think that - for those of us who should know better - deep down we actually disagree with Evolution, because to you, how could someone be presented with what you see as overwhelming evidence and deny it?
Where I part with Evolutionists framing of Evolution is the material confines naturalism as all there is, which precludes a designer. I see design all over the evidence. I might even prescribe to macro evolution if data showed that an intelligent source planted life on earth, and that then germinated into everything we know today, and had a hand in the process. That is more palpable then material nothing + random chance + natural selection equals life, and life evolving into things it wasn't instructed to evolve into.
But that's the point. That's why I don't bother much. It won't end. One of the earliest "examples" ID advocates used was the flagellum of bacteria. It requires 30 proteins to create it, and of course they tried to argue all 30 had to be in place before the flagellum could work...until scientists showed about 10 are actually in a secretory organ of some bacteria...if this was mathematics it would be over, but it's not. They just move on to something else.
But one thing I don't believe has been brought up yet, and, guess what, I have a question for MarketAndChurch, that's a surprise coming from me if you ever seen me post on PPR.
You claim there is an intelligent designer guiding things in the place of natural selection. Never mind I know who you think that designer is, that is an obvious answer to a simple question. But something this designer completely screwed up is the death trap that is human child birth. From an evolutionary standpoint, you can see that the danger of the mother and/or the child dying came from a consequence of going from scampering on four legs to walking on two. If this designer was as intelligent as you say, then it wouldn't have taken so long for people to figure out a Caesarean section would save numerous lives, the baby would just come out of the abdomen by itself to save all the pain. Now, in the Bible it is quite clear where the pains of child birth come from and why it is not so easy anymore (don't give me a run around, where does the pain come from?). But since you are not a creationist, you don't believe that story, so how can you explain this terrible process from an ID perspective?
Did you know birds today came from small meat-eating dinosaurs? Since the birds came before the land animals in the Judeo-Christian Creation Myth, these two separate ideas cannot be compatible. You can see the display at the Carnegie Museum of Natural History in Pittsburgh. Most people are looking for like a crocaduck or something like that, but there a clear trace from these dinosaurs to the robins eating worms in my backyard. Here is the TalkOrigins section on macroevolution, read to your heart's content, I'm sure you'll critically analyze this well and come back more educated.
I honestly do not know how any movement would go without a structured campaign and expect to survive. Atheists play by the exact blueprint, makes you wonder if the people hear themselves. You act like this is a power move foreign to atheism.

No, ID is labeled as dishonest because, besides lying about their true motives, the Dishonesty Institute spreads so many distortions and LIES to further their agenda, besides their using weasel words and rhetorical tricks instead of arguing honestly in good faith based solely on the evidence.
So you admit that the Discovery Institute has been dishonest about its motives. Do you also admit that they spread LIES about the evidence? And you think that atheists need to LIE to support evolution? You seem to be saying here that it is okay to tell lies to further your agenda because in your opinion everyone does it. BS! And what about all the millions of people who do NOT see a conflict between accepting observable reality and their faith? Accepting evolution does not automatically make one an atheist, but so many who argue against evolution say it does.
All you have is argument from incredulity, the watchmaker analogy, and the God of the gaps. That is ALL you have. None of these provide any reasonable or testable scientific alternative to evolution. THAT is why intelligent design is not science. Irreducible complexity has been debunked. In order to redefine science to include "intelligent design" one would have to also say that astrology is just as valid as astronomy, that reading sheep entrails is an accurate way to foretell the future, and so on.
Believing in a Creator is one thing. Spreading LIES about His Creation is something else. THAT is why the Discovery Institute is regarded as dishonest. They bring shame to honest creationists and make humanity look really bad.

As a Christian, I think evolution is actually possible because Genesis doesn't mention the step-by-step process that God used to create everything in their respective days. Plus said "days" may not necessarily be literal 24-hour periods of time. A "day" could have been several thousand years (people were living to be over 900 back then--compared to our currently measly life expectancy of 78 here).
Of course there are literalists who believe the latter, like Granny Cuyler on Squidbillies--"I didn't come from no monkey's butthole!"

The Greeks did call it insane. They called the Jews lazy because they rested every 7th day.
It baffled them why one would take a break from life, to just be with friends and family, to rest and not work, to give their animals rest, to reenact creation by resting on the 7th day as God did.
To the ancient Jew, it is understood that we are not merely here to work. That God took them out of slavery in Egypt wherein they had to work 7 days a week. There are other things more important then work, even if you do work every day of the week but get paid a million bucks, the torah feels you are still a slave, even if well-paid, a slave to your money, identity, and performance. This life time is short, at the end of your life, you can spend your dying days on a pile of money, and it won't mean a thing to you -- memories of people are what will occupy your mind, so they should be what focuses your mind long before your mortality forces you to, and to commit one day out of the week to just that is morally elevating. The Greeks had a philosophical concept of this as well, their insult was just out of misunderstanding.
Jews were not the first to think this way. Hunter-gatherers only worked to gather food as long as necessary, and in times of plenty that was only a few hours a day. There's no evidence that any of them worked as much as 8 hours a day to survive. Anthropologists seem to agree that it's the demands of civilization, capitalism, and agriculture that lead to long work days and weeks.
