Meh. I get the feeling we'll end up having another civil war sooner or later anyways because of the divide in our country. The most I can hope for when that happens is a quick and painless death.
I feel like it's coming, sooner or later. I'm not talking about tinfoil-hat-wearing, hide-out-in-a-bunker, conspiracy theorist, so don't misunderstand me. I think it's always a good idea to take a few cues from "preppers" to make sure you are self-sufficient and can maintain a life without the need for commercial goods and services. Learn to plant vegetable gardens. Get a 3D printer and keep a large supply of a composite of your choice, and learn how to make common, everyday items so you don't have to depend on anyone else for that. Practice prototyping in the meantime, because if you have something that can benefit other people and can trade for goods and services, you'll come out on top--or at least hold your own. Practice living off-grid. Set up private networks at your home, learn how to be your own IT department, learn how to code. I mean...there are all sorts of things you can do to make yourself valuable in the midst of societal collapse.
But also, more importantly, find people who share your values and start trading amongst yourselves. The reason that anyone even manages to survive, and I mean utterly worthless people, is because there are still so many smart people propping them up. If you take all the smart people, all the leaders, the inventors, the innovators, the creatives--artists and musicians, too--just take them all completely out of society, the bad guys out there would turn on each other. People like that have no redeeming qualities, and society would collapse. There would be a day when there's nobody left, yet the smart people already have their own societal structure. I don't believe EVERYONE who has a brain and uses it is going to get an invite to "Galt's Gulch" (Google it if you don't get the reference), but they certainly do need to stake out some safe place of their own and surround themselves with people they know they can trust.
I believe we're in a place of mass delusion and denial. We haven't gone so far down that path we can't reverse it. But what it takes is EVERYONE spontaneously, willingly signing on to the idea people make things and EARN their rights and privileges and are rewarded for excellence. If you don't win the trophy, then be happy for the man or woman who did. If your reason for doing a task or making a product is because there's a need and there's no other talent available, don't be surprised if talent shows up and runs you out of business. Be GLAD that a capable person shows up, and be content to do what you REALLY love. Be glad there's work to do at all.
Otherwise, travel light and be ready to run to the border if you have to. The problem I have with open borders in this country is nothing against immigrants. Ideally we ought to have open borders. If migrants are running from a bad situation and they intend to go where they can prosper, PLEASE let them in. The problem is that you have so many migrants fleeing a bad home situation because they know they'll be safe in the US because of what the US is and what it represents, but when they actually get here, they proceed to take where they live and shape it into exactly the situation they flew from to begin with. Free healthcare. Free money. Free housing. That's EXACTLY the kinds of things they were promised by corrupt politicians back home, but they don't see that the "free everything" mentality was what led exactly to the mess they found themselves in. They don't seem to have a concept that this mentality is immoral and that this immorality was what destroyed their homeland and will destroy ours if we allow those kinds of things to take root here.
As it is, we have too many good people here who are committed to being open-minded and striking a balance. So I don't think the collapse of western society in America is something we need worry about, at least not in my lifetime. Maybe not in my kids' lifetime. But I do see it as potentially the reality for my grandchildren and beyond. We're going to eventually reach the point where the destruction of the country is preferable to propping it up, and it would be useful to at least for us to get into a mental practice of being ready for it.

Lincoln was always ready to go easy on the south. When the US government got tough with the defeated south, it was only because the plantation oligarchs had tried to reinstate slavery under the name of "apprenticeship," and when Confederate veterans hiding behind hoods had terrorized and murdered freed blacks and so called carpetbaggers.

No, I never said you were going to Hell (Aspies shouldn't try reading between the lines, me included). My point was, I was raised to believe in grace and love earned by the God who humbled himself to die on the cross. Not one who believes in damning people for something their ancestors were responsible for.
For all our disagreements, you make a lot of sense to me here. Good stuff.
TW1ZTY, be careful about who you choose to believe. White southern gentry were NOT the good guys in the Civil War. Much of the history was rewritten not to favor the victors, but rather the victims. What we are supposed to think is that modern American liberalism won the war and through a series of events the good guys jumped ship and joined the Democratic party and mean, evil racists jumped ship and became Republicans. True, the Democratic Party has made itself repulsive to bigots, but white democrats do continue to hold a condescending attitude towards victim classes. Those poor non-whites can’t do anything for themselves, they NEED their wealthy, white saviors.
Seriously, for most of my life I’ve been a figurative Confederate flag saver until it occurred to me that flag never represented any of my values. A lot of white Republicans cheer for the south on the premise of states’ rights, but they have a skewed sense of history that plays right into the hands of victim hood. I can’t blame people for buying the narrative and believing we’re all bigots when we don’t strike at the source of it.
Don’t even take my word for it, either. Take a good look at the events leading up to the War of Northern Aggression and the aftermath. I think you’ll find it was never about North vs South, but rather the regional conflict was dominated by distinct ideologies. Southerners got pulled into the war as a matter of defending the lives of their loved ones and deserve to be honored for that. But the government they served was committed to preserving a cruel and unjust institution and is not to be cheered for. It’s strictly been a political war ever since, and the metaphorical South has made significant gains in the last few decades. California pretty much is its own separate country. Blacks continue to be segregated, a cycle perpetuated by “community organizers.” I’ve heard of Hispanics who accept welfare because it pays more to NOT get a job. Remind me...whose policies removed incentives for work? Was it the same party who championed slavery? Heck, if we can’t make ‘em work, at least we can get their votes, right?
Like I said, draw your own conclusions. “The South” is just everyone’s whipping boy, a convenient one for collectivists in this country. It’s a scapegoat. When you get right down to it, this has absolutely nothing to do with geography.
It was during the civil rights era, and the Nixon and Reagan Presidencies that white southern Democrats became Republicans, primarily because Republicans had enticed them with racial resentment.
Who says liberal leaders hold poor people in contempt, beyond right wing talking points?
Maybe poor people wouldn't prefer welfare to holding down a job if employers gave them incentive to work, such as offering them a living wage, and benefits to cover all medical and dental concerns.

Not at all. I'm stating historic fact.
As a matter of fact, there were plenty of white southerners who had stayed loyal to the Union, either fighting with the Union army or carrying out guerrilla warfare within the Confederacy, and even taking part in Reconstruction. Why not ever give these people recognition?

Um, because I hate the Union for destroying us and leaving us to starve in the first place? Because I know that the north looks down on the south for being racist because they are hypocrites? Because I hate this country for what it has done to the Native Americans by stealing their land? Because I hate this country for dropping atomic bombs on Japan during World War 2 and being unapologetic about it to this day? Because I hate our government for contributing to all the wars and chaos in the Middle East for profit? Because I read all about what we did in Abu Ghraib during the War in Iraq and how that quickly got swept under the rug? Because I hate this country for getting us into the Veitnam War over a lie? Because I hate this country for sabatoging governments in South and Central America and establishing dictatorships in countries like Chile and Guatemala (and Cuba, which ended up backfiring on us) out of purely selfish interests for our own country?
So in my opinion that Union was not worth fighting or dying for. I feel like the only person who truly sees through America's hypocritical BS.

Take a deep breath. No, several.

That sounds like how Hollywood would tell 6 year olds the story, but we all know it's more complicated than that.
When you get worked-up you have a tendency to both over-simplify and put words in people's mouths.
If people need to pick a good guys/bad guys it's fair to use slavery as a deciding point. But, to have mature discussions we all need to be willing to accept that none of the players involved in that conflict were perfect and that war crimes were committed by both sides. Slavery is the one issue that makes for a serious divide between the two main players and ultimately was the cause, as detailed in the letters of secession by the various Confederate states. That was the 'state right' in question.
It doesn't mean that every single CSA soldier fought for that cause and that cause alone, it doesn't mean they're monsters who can't possibly have redeeming qualifies - it does mean they fought for a shameful cause and have that stain on their souls, if you believe in such things. People often act like racism or other forms of bigotry are binary traits as though someone who possesses them can't also have positive, humanizing traits. Most people are complicated, even people who fought for horrible regimes or otherwise participated in or enabled horrible acts. Even the most depraved criminals who've lived probably have a more complex moral character when examined up close, but it's unfair to expect the average person to learn that much detail before making their judgment - people are imperfect and so are their judgments.

Well not everybody, don't forget that in my country they put a Hollywood reality star in charge of the whole government.

Most folks who try to discuss the US Civil War on here, because there's not too many people on here who aren't history buffs who mention it.

You are right. You're not the only one and that's why the liberal lying establishment is falling apart.

Um. Don't get me wrong. I still don't trust the Right either.
I'm just a free thinker who's fed up with American politics. Both the left and right.
That's my point. The real left is revolting against liberals as well as the right. US foreign policy is indefensible. Only liberals and necons defend it pretty much.
