The founders of the US constitution wanted a separation of powers. There is religion in the state, but there is no state religion. The founders feared not the state influencing the church, but the church influencing the state.

Freedom from religion is inherently the state influencing the church just by it's very nature.

No kidding they did not want influence from the church on the state, that was entirely my point!

Freedom from religion is the state guaranteeing no religious groups can have authority over the governance of a nation that is full of diverse religious and philosophical beliefs. The church is not an authority comparable to a state and has to answer to the government. It is not above the law and neither are religious beliefs. Religious beliefs are not untouchable. Your religious beliefs should have no effect on my life anymore than some Muslim's should have on yours

Communist state atheism as practiced by those regimes that engaged in violent repression is not in any way equivalent to this

If you are free from pain, you can never feel pain. If you are free of pain you are currently not feeling pain.

See the difference?

Well, one of the points that I keep pounding on is that anti-intellectualism is not restricted to religious people or borne of a direct result of being religious. In fact, when anti-intellectualism manifests in religion, it is a result of over-reliance on unreformed Persian-style thought processes. This wouldn't be harmful to a nation of accountants, but it inhibits one from grasping more dynamic systems or situations.

I agree, but whether a church is guilty (and the church has been guilty of it many times) or any other organisation, it is a terrible thing and that organisation loses whatever credibility they may have had in my mind.
Anti-intellectualism has shown its face wherever there has been tyranny and greed, though. Evil men can only prosper while the truth cannot be freed.

Quote:
Rejecting an idea purely because it is against your beliefs is just dumb.
"A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds, adored by little statesmen and philosophers and divines. With consistency a great soul has simply nothing to do. He may as well concern himself with his shadow on the wall. Speak what you think now in hard words, and to-morrow speak what to-morrow thinks in hard words again, though it contradict every thing you said to-day. — 'Ah, so you shall be sure to be misunderstood.' — Is it so bad, then, to be misunderstood? Pythagoras was misunderstood, and Socrates, and Jesus, and Luther, and Copernicus, and Galileo, and Newton, and every pure and wise spirit that ever took flesh. To be great is to be misunderstood."

Ralph Waldo Emerson. A wise man in many ways. A silly jackass in others. For both reasons, I rather like him. I would never quote a philosopher I wouldn't feel comfortable calling an idiot, wherever it were warranted. If you can't disagree with a man and still think he's brilliant, you are led by fools, and you will be led by them in crucifying the next sage.

Quote:
One must examine the facts as they are known whether they think it is possible or not.
Ah, I suggest mindfulness meditation for that.

Emerson may have avoided foolish consistency, but I worry that he might have been consistently foolish. Consider the exponents of his ideas, i.e. Henry David Thoreau.
Like I said, I would not quote a man I could not find fault in. Someone who has never spoken foolishly has seldom ever said anything that was worth saying. Even Aristotle postulated things that honest philosophers laugh about now, such as claiming that women had fewer teeth than men, and didn't Thales even fall into a well once and get himself scolded by his maid for it?

Emerson was a brilliant man. If you can point out ideas in his repertoire that are laughable, what have you proven other than that he was able to say something original?

What? I have never heard such rubbish in my life.

Freedom from religion is the lack of any laws that are grounded in a religion. Sodomy laws, gay marriage laws, prohibition, blasphemy, state mandated religion, that sort of thing.

You fail to understand, and for that I fail to teach you. :(

You haven't taught me anything, but you've certainly reaffirmed my belief that the sooner the human race evolves past such crutches as religion the better.

It's pretty obvious 90% of humanity is brain damaged. You're no exception.

Brain damaged?!?

Pray tell what my brain damage is. Is it free thought? A belief in science? A belief in freedom? How is my brain damaged?

According to some patrons of Wrong Planet we have no free thought, and belief is acceptance without evidence. So you tell me. :)

cw10, please don't insult people on this forum in this manner, it is highly disrespectful.

Secondly, your posts in this thread have a common theme, they lack coherent thought, rationality, or logic. You may not, and likely don't, understand that what you are saying simply fails on every possible level to make any sense at all.

I personally recommend that you reevaluate your core capabilities, and set for yourself some goals for personal improvement along the lines of learning deductive reasoning, sound judgment, avoiding logical fallacies, etc. Once you learn the basics on how to form a true statement, and a logically sound argument, you will likely find increased success at both understanding other people, and getting them to understand you.

Or it's possible that you don't understand English. It's not uncommon. Many times have I called into India looking for answers to seemingly easily solvable issues such as "my phone has not registered the prepaid minutes I paid for", unable to understand my seemingly incoherent ramblings, I was then connected to the retention department with an individual who understands and speaks English, and within 5 minutes my issue was resolved.

You and some people on this forum are no different, however I will make amends to those who do not speak English as a first language or even a second language for it seems it's impossible to understand even under the best circumstances. Phrases such as "Pull" clearly labeled on a door ignored where people try to push.

Is it that difficult to understand the difference between the words "of" and "from"?

"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion" at least in the establishment clause of the US constitution. That does not mean America has protected rights to be free from religion, merely the state will not interfere with whatever you hold true as long as you respect the laws of the land. No one has immunity to be free from being offended by anything or anyone. Be it a nativity scene or some nut on a train shouting about Jesus, and this offends Atheists because it's written in their religion one must respect and not offend anyone. Apparently doing so overcooks the pasta. 8O
