Because God wants us to CHOOSE to live for Him.

If God made himself plainly evident, we would really have no choice.

We know gravity is real. You can choose to ignore it, but with very painful results.

There's consequences for not choosing to follow God, but for us to be free to choose or reject, we must have the ability to credibly believe God doesn't exist. Proof of God's existence means we can't choose to ignore God's reality, and the choice becomes one of choosing God or choosing the consequence of rejection. Most would choose God rather out of desire to avoid the consequence and not because the legitimately want a relationship with God.

perhaps god visits often disguised as a traffic jam, a bustling supermarket, or a flattened soda can on the sidewalk, hidden only from those with rigid moralistic demands for how a proper god should dress.
