Oh okay. But cancel culture is an issue of right and left then, as oppose to being independent of those political parties?

I might need some actual examples, but my knowledge of actual banning from platforms generally have a breaking of Terms of Service, it isn't just that they expressed their thoughts. It should be their own fault that their opinion may be some form of harassment or telling really bad lies that could do harm.

I can try to look for some. It seems happen here and there where someone was cancelled for having this opinion, etc. I can look around for specific names.

You don't mean like Milo, do you? Because he got banned from platforms for repeated incidents of harassment.

Correct, because there isn't one reason.

Many of the arguments about cancel culture appear to be originating from the right targeting the media and higher education institutions as breeding grounds for left-wing "WOKE" SJWs. The right argue that these groups influence government policy and private companies.

It's the fear of saying something that will get you cancelled. Ironically the left aren't immune to this culture.

Pardon my ignorance, what is a nappy hoe?

Nappy is a British term for diaper.

Hoe is a garden tool.

Nappy can mean "having tightly curled hair", like that of Black person of African descent.

And "hoe" can be slang for "whore".

Okay, I don't see how that is racist and Cyrus used a misogynistic term so what he said was misogynist. Anyone guy thst calls a woman the c word or the b word or the w word are misoginists IMO.

It's both.

It's an insult for tightly curled hair.

So it means 'ugly black whore with ugly black people hair'.

You guys love cancel culture. @MileyCyrus
come get your sister!

Ms. Owens a "conservative" blogger was pointing out hypocrisy, in other words saying "have a taste of your own medicine". That is not approval, but disapproval.

Imus slur so racist it has fallen from U.S. use - Rueters 2007
Quote:
When syndicated U.S. radio host Don Imus called a mostly black women’s basketball team “nappy-headed hos,” he used a slur considered so racist it has mostly fallen out of modern American usage.

In many English-speaking countries, the word “nappy” means a diaper or a Scottish ale. But in the United States it is seen as a vile slur describing the tightly-curled natural hair texture of many African Americans.

“I have not heard ‘nappy’ for years and I was born in the South,” Soukhanov, 63, said, describing Imus’s comments as “antique racism -- words not used anymore except by people who are very insensitive to the culture we live in.”

By contrast “ho” is slang for “whore” whose usage has exploded in hip-hop music and popular culture in recent years, prompting some black leaders to urge record companies to halt the use of offensive words in rap music.

“Nappy” derives from the Middle English word “noppy” or “noppe,” used to describe the frayed edge of a piece of cloth. It became a slur in common usage in America by the 1890s.

In 1998 the children’s book “Nappy Hair,” published in 1997 as a celebration of black culture, made national headlines when Ruth Sherman, a white school teacher, read it to her elementary class in Brooklyn of mostly black and Hispanic kids.

Her action brought protests from black parents who said the teacher was insensitive to the politics of black hair and self-esteem. Sherman said the book had a positive message but she received threats and resigned from the school.

Jesse Sheidlower, editor-at-large for the Oxford English Dictionary, said the cases of Sherman and Imus are indicative of how the use of sensitive words depends on who says them.

“But it is almost never OK for non-members of a particular community to use such terminology,” he said. “‘Nappy-headed’ in particular is clearly a term which is very, very sensitive.”

Imus was fired for using the racist and sexist slur.

Freedom of speech does not mean people are required to give you a platform. Youtube and Facebook banning certain language or banning users for using certain language may technically be "censorship", but it is NOT an infringement of free speech. You can still say it, just not HERE. Freedom of speech does not mean you are required or obligated to assist in the proliferation of someone's message. This applies to companies like youtube and facebook. They can remove anything they deem to violate their standards. Their standards can be whatever they want them to be, with a few exceptions.

Free speech doesn't work the way people seem to think it does. The amendments to the constitution are not absolute and infinite in scope and reach. Under the provision of strict scrutiny, impositions can be made, even to the amendments to the constitution. The supreme court has the authority to interpret the laws and amendments of the nation, and determine their constitutionality, and set precedent for how the law should be interpreted in specific or unclear cases.

In the matter of freedom of speech, the court has made many rulings that people don't like or choose to ignore, but are quite real none the less. You can't make people recite the pledge of allegiance - not even kids in school. Burning or otherwise damaging the american flag IS a protected form of free speech. The government CAN dictate WHERE and WHEN you hold a public assembly. If you're a convicted felon, your right to bear arms CAN be suspended. The constitution and the bill of rights are not an ironclad list of inflexible decrees. They're more of a guide of the direction we're supposed to be going. That's why we change them or add to them from time to time. That's why they're called amendments. You can amend them.

Just think of it like working at a work place or going to a support group or being in school, there had always been rules on what you couldn't say there. Schools I have been too had zero tolerance for any gun related and drugs and alcohol and clothing with it. If you wore a shirt that had anything about drugs or alcohol, they would either send you home to change your shirt or make you wear it inside out. If you had any of this on your assignment, it would bring down your grade. Someone once drew a whine glass on their project and was confused why they didn't have an A. The science teacher pointed to the glass. The student thought that was so R word.

Religion is pretty much not allowed either at work nor at public school, I mean talking about it of course. Some places don't even allow politics.

I don't see how social media is any different. If you are unhappy about it, find another platform. I know there are plenty already like Parlor or saidit. I find it hilarious how I see people on youtube saying "find me on (insert website here) where I can speak things youtube censors" and I wonder why are they still on that platform. Just go already. I think they are just doing it as an ad as someone pointed out and I gotta agree here.

Imagine if this worked like real life. "Hey everyone, go find me at (insert school here) where I can express myself freely without being censored this school does" and they continue attending that school. You wonder why are they still attending if they had found another school to transfer to. Same applies to work places too.

Ho isn't slang for whore. It's just whore pronounced with an AAVE accent. Non-rhotic accents drop rs so a word like whore comes out closer to hau or hoe.

It's a reaction from the right that is feeding the protest against cancel culture. Everyone knows this. I recommend reading a book by Robin Di Angelo called "White fragility", While I don't agree with all her assertions the general premise is correct that conservative backlash over political correctness has spawned a countermovement against the left. People who might have sat on the fence have joined this countermovement angry they have to watch what they say lest they offend groups traditionally marganilised by society so this explains why so many working class and poor folk in America supported Trump. What they perceived as "American values" relating to free speech were under attack and they have fallen for the narrative.

I do, however, agree that a correction is due whereby the left need to listen to voices of people who feel they are not being heard.

This movement is driving moderate people to extremes and to listen to doctrine whether it be left or right.

Anne Soukhanov, U.S. editor of the Encarta Webster’s Dictionary disagrees with you.
As does Oxford dictionary
I have seen it spelled "hoe" also

I sure learn something everyday, Google didn't even recognize nappy and hoe as a slang racist term. There is Candance Owens answer, if the search engine doesn't recognize the term, how would the leftists know?

"Nappy-haired" is a frequent insult from one African-American woman to another. Somebody from another race better not insult an African-American woman that way.

It means that one's hair is like Brillo, and is the opposite of stereotypical "white people's" hair (straight, silky, and soft).

I Googled exactly "nappy hoe" and got the articles only about the incident said by Cyrus. Which is why I said the search engine didn't recognize the term.
